Presentation on theme: "Aim: What are the major parts to the Nervous System?  Do Now: What is a neuron?  Vocabulary: Neurons, impulses, synapse, neurotransmitters, sensory neurons,"— Presentation transcript:

Aim: What are the major parts to the Nervous System?  Do Now: What is a neuron?  Vocabulary: Neurons, impulses, synapse, neurotransmitters, sensory neurons, inter neurons, motor neurons, Peripheral Nervous system, parasympathetic system, sympathetic system, Reflex  HW: due Wednesday read pages 432-439 in textbook. Answer questions 439 #’s 1-4 on loose leaf. Remember to write questions and answers!

Function of the Nervous System  Process Information  Stores Information  Controls Voluntary movements  Controls Involuntary process and actions  Stimulus Vs Response

Types of Neurons  Sensory Neurons  Interneurons  Motor Neurons

Aim: How is the nervous system arranged and what is the function of the synapse?  Do Now: How does a neuron’s structure compliment its function?  Vocabulary: Neurons, impulses, synapse, neurotransmitters, sensory neurons, inter neurons, motor neurons, Peripheral Nervous system, parasympathetic system, sympathetic system, Reflex  HW: due tomorrow read pages 432-439 in textbook. Answer questions 439 #’s 1-4 on loose leaf. Remember to write questions and answers!  Journals due on Tuesday for those participating in the research project

What is a Neuron? Sketch a picture in your notebooks Work together to label and define the parts of the neuron Cell Body

The Synapse and Neurotransmitters…

Synaptic Animation  http://www.bishopstopford.com/faculties/ science/arthur/synapse.swf http://www.bishopstopford.com/faculties/ science/arthur/synapse.swf

Parts of the Nervous System Central Nervous System BrainSpinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System Autonomic Nervous System Somatic Nervous System

Aim: What are the parts to the nervous system?  Do Now: What is the function of a neurotransmitter? What would happen if a neurotransmitter stayed bound to a receptor site for a long period of time?  Hand in HW

Review of HW pg 439  List and Describe the role of the three kinds of neurons.  What two parts of the brain are responsible for controlling your balance and coordination?  The synapse plays an important role in the transmission of an impulse. What might happen if an impulse is unable to travel across a synapse for some reason?  List three feelings you might experience and describe what part of the autonomic nervous system will be most involved with each feeling.

Discussion Questions…  Based on the information about the nervous system how do you think a drug like aspirin might affect nerve impulses?  How do you think it might affect the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?

Aim: How do drugs affect the body?  Do Now: What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.  HW: Pg 450 questions 1-5 due tomorrow.  Test next week on 12/12

Activity  Define the difference between legal drugs and illegal drugs.  What are the different methods for administering a drug?  How do drugs affect the brain?  Describe the different types of drugs.  What is a side effect?
