Human Body System Nervous System BY: Nidda Zubair Anisa Akbar Amenah Saleh Zenab Hussain Malak Almawri Ifrat Mahmoud Kalthuom Alomari

Question? What does the nervous system do and how does it work?

Functions The nervous system is in charge of relaying messages throughout your body. It allows you to feel pain, heat, cold, and pressure. Helps your body respond to stimuli from your environment.

Nerve Cells Conducts impulses throughout the nervous system Made up of three parts: cell body, dendrites, and an axon. Dendrites are extensions that receive impulses and carry them towards the cell body. Axon is an extension that carries impulses to other nerve cell, muscles or glands.

Continued There are three types of nerve cells: sensory nerves, motor nerves, and interneuron. Sensory nerves carry impulses from the body to the spinal cord and brain. Interneuron processes impulses and pass response impulses to motor nerves. Motor nerves carry the response impulse to a muscle or gland.

The Two Nervous Systems Central Nervous System: this includes your brain and spinal cord. This part of your system is responsible for interpreting impulses and sending a response impulse. Peripheral Nervous System: this section of your nervous system transmits signals between your body & the central nervous system (includes somatic-voluntary & autonomic-involuntary)

The Brain: made of three parts Cerebrum: controls conscious activities, intelligence, memory, language, skeletal muscle movements, and senses Cerebellum: controls balance, posture, and coordination Brain Stem: controls involuntary actions and connects the different parts of the brain

Disorders of the Nervous System Stroke: strokes occur when blood vessels leading to the brain become blocked. This can damage your brain and affect the function of your nervous system. Paralysis: occurs when the spinal cord is damaged. This prevents the transfer of nerve impulses from the brain to the rest of the body. Some effects include no feeling or movement below the spine.
