The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia In 1606 the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery set sail for the New World After 4 months, 108 men and boys crossed the Atlantic Ocean The trip was paid for by the Virginia Company of London The main goal of this trip was to return gold to Europe.

The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia In May 1607 the colonists chose a site that provided trade routes with Native Americans and good vision to protect from the Spanish the settlement was called Jamestown

The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia By January 1608 hardships had plagued Jamestown only 38 of the original 108 men were still alive Hardships included: illness, lack of food and fresh water, skirmishes with the Native Americans, no gold, and discontent

The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia In 1609 Jamestown became a joint-stock company shares were sold to the public During this time more settlers moved to Jamestown looking for riches instead they suffered through the ‘starving time’ and the colony almost perished

The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia For 2 years the settlement was led by Captain John Smith Smith became friends with Powhatan (chief of the Powhatan empire) and his daughter Pocahontas the native Americans helped the settlers with supplies Eventually hostilities resumed and the 60 settlers left in Jamestown almost abandoned the settlement

The Founding Of Jamestown, Virginia In 1614 Pocahontas married an English tobacco grower named John Rolfe the marriage brought a temporary peace between the settlers and the Native Americans The peace eventually vanished after the settlers expanded onto Powhatan land in order to grow tobacco

Jamestown Becomes a Self-Ruling Colony In 1619 Jamestown established its own government ▫Representatives were called burgesses and they served in the House of Burgesses ▫The House of Burgesses was the first representative government in America 15 of the 22 burgesses were voted in by the people ▫All laws passed by the House of Burgesses had to be approved by the governor

Jamestown Becomes a Self-Ruling Colony 1619: 20 Africans were brought to James Jamestown and sold as indentured servants 1630s: some Africans were enslaved while others were indentured servants 1640s: blacks were not allowed to carry guns 1692: blacks could no longer own horses nor cattle Early 1700s: enslaved Africans and indentured servants made up half of Virginia’s labor force

Jamestown Becomes a Self-Ruling Colony Jamestown faced difficulties through the 1600s ▫1624: King James made J-town the first royal colony in America burgesses were useless ▫1639: House of Burgesses was re-established ▫1676: Nathaniel Bacon led Virginians against Native Americans in order to move West this was against Governor Berkley’s orders After being scolded, Bacon led his followers against Jamestown and set the settlement on fire Bacon’s Revolt showed that the movement West by the settlers could not be prevented

New England Settlement 1620: 102 people including 50 Pilgrims seeking religious freedom, left England for America ▫Some Pilgrims were Separatists who were seeking to start a new church away from the Church of England ▫The Virginia Company allowed the Pilgrims to settle in Virginia for half of the future profits however a storm blew them of course and they settled near Plymouth ▫Since they weren’t in any jurisdiction they ruled themselves 41 men signed the Mayflower Compact

New England Settlement Through the Mayflower Compact the colony elected its first governor, John Carver, and later, William Bradford The Plymouth colony followed the Mayflower Compact until the colony was absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691

1629: a group of Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Company north of the Plymouth Colony John Winthrop, the Puritan leader, and 1,000 Puritans hoped to create a model Puritan settlement in America The charter allowed for the Puritans to create the General Court it allowed them to levy taxes and elect the governor and assistants

The General Court was made up of “freemen” (stockholders) When the number of freemen became too large, the General Court became a two-house representative system much like Parliament 1684: The Massachusetts Bay Colony lost its charter because it openly violated the Navigation Acts imposed by England

New England Settlement The Puritans came to America for religious freedom, but they didn’t tolerate others In order to increase church numbers the Puritans started the “Half-Way Covenant” this allowed people to be members of the church but they didn’t get voting rights Salem ( a Puritan village) was the peek of witch hysteria of the 1600’s ▫The Salem Witch Trials: during 1692, dozens of men, women, and children were accused of witch and placed in jail ▫At the end of the Trials (10 months), 19 people were convicted of being witches and hanged

New England Settlement Native Americans helped early settlers with trade, farming, and hunting Conflicts arose as settlers moved West and took Native American lands and homes ▫Chief Metacomet (King Phillip) led the Wampanoag people against the invading settlers with help from the Mohawks, the settlers defeated killed Metacomet and ended King Phillip’s war

The Mid-Atlantic Colonies 1624: the Dutch West India Company (merchants) created trading posts on the Hudson River 1646: the Dutch created New Amsterdam settlement on Manhattan Island this became a major trading post in America 1664: the Dutch turned the colony over to England it was renamed New York

The Mid-Atlantic Colonies 1636: Thomas Hooker and others left Massachusetts and formed Connecticut their laws were called the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut 1630’s: Rhode Island was created as a refuge for people seeking to separate church and state 1681: William Penn and the Quakers founded Pennsylvania stressed religious tolerance which attracted other settlers like Germans and Scot-Irish 1703: Delaware was created from Pennsylvania lands

French Quebec Originally, French explorers sought a northwest passage around North America to Asia. Failure to find a passage caused the French to establish a trading post in order to send valuable natural resources to Europe. Quebec became the first permanent French settlement in North America.
