MOTION
2
Are you moving? An object is in motion if its distance from another object is changing.
3
Reference Points A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion An object is in motion if it changes positions relative to a reference point
4
Choosing Reference Points Good reference points are stationary Trees, signs, buildings What if the reference point is moving?
5
Relative Motion Are you (as a whole) moving when you take notes Relative to the door? Relative to the sun? Earth moves about 30km/s
6
Calculating Speed If you know the distance an object travel in a certain amount of time, you can calculate the speed of the object Speed is a rate Speed = Distance/time
7
Examples Cyclist travels 30 km in 2 hours 30km = distance 2 hours = time Speed = 30km/2hr or 15km/h
8
Average Speed Our cyclist goes slower up hill compared to downhill 32km the first 2 hours, and 13 km the next 1 hour Total distance/total time = average speed What is the average speed?
9
Instantaneous Speed Rate at which an object is moving at a given instant in time Cars speedometer
10
Velocity A snow storm is traveling at a speed of 25 km/hr Should we prepare for the storm?
11
Velocity Depends on which way the storm is moving! When you know both the speed and direction of an object’s motion, you know the velocity of the object Speed in a given direction is called velocity 23 km/hr north
