Message from ACFA Chair C.Zhang IHEP CCAST ILC Accelerator Workshop and First Asian ILC R&D Seminar under JSPS Core University November 5, 2007

2 Congratulate to the successful opening of the CCAST ILC Accelerator Workshop and First Asian ILC R&D Seminar

3 ACFA Asian Committee for Future Accelerators Officially established in the First Plenary ACFA meeting held in 1996 at POSTECH, Korea

4 Purpose of the ACFA The primary purpose of ACFA shall be to strengthen regional collaboration in accelerator-based sciences. In particular, ACFA seeks cooperative ways: to facilitate efficient utilization of existing human and material resources, to bring up accelerator scientists of the next generation, and to encourage future accelerator projects in Asia and to make recommendations for them to governments.

5 ACFA will carry out its business according to the following guiding principles: ACFA is open to any active region in Asia which is willing to contribute to the advancement of accelerator-based science. ACFA is not intended to displace or supersede any existing organization. ACFA will closely cooperate with ICFA (International Committee for Future Accelerators).

6 regular meetings of the Plenary ACFA; schools, symposia, workshops, and conferences sponsored or organized by ACFA, or jointly with other organizations; study groups for special issues, set up by ACFA, or jointly with other organizations;  ACFA can engage in the following activities:

7 Network Working Group Electronic Publication Working Group HPPA Group Working Group LC Physics/Detector Working Group Advanced Accelerator Working Group Asia Linear Collider Steering Committee ACFA Working Groups ACFA Working Groups

8 ACFA Statement on the e + e - Linear Collider ACFA Statement on the e + e - Linear Collider issued on Feb. 23, 1997 at the 2nd Plenary ACFA Meeting ACFA has discussed the Action Plan of the Japan High Energy Committee aimed at constructing of the e+e- linear collider in the Asia-Pacific region, and endorses the same. ACFA expects that Asia will become one of the most active regions in the field of accelerator-based science and technology. It is extremely important that the countries in the region work together closely to achieve this goal. A frontier facility like the e+e- linear collider is important as a spearhead to promote all fields of basic science and technology; it could also be instrumental in establishing a major international organization in the Asia Pacific region from which all countries in the region can benefit.

9 The Second ACFA Statement on the e + e - Linear Collider The Second ACFA Statement on the e + e - Linear Collider issued on Sept. 18, 2001 at the 6th Plenary ACFA Meeting The LC project gains the common asset for us the human- kind towards the knowledge of the ultimate structure of Nature, hence it contributes crucially to the human culture. Since the project is based on various types of ultramodern technologies, it promotes all kinds of technologies and hence enormously contributes to the industries. Especially an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) is a direct application of the LC technology for material science, nano-technology, studies on chemical reactions, and structural biology. The international LC collaborations based on Asia will help promote a mutual understanding of the cultural differences and similarities. To promote the energy frontier machine in Asia motivates the world high energy physics community to be truly global.

13 However, difference among countries in Asia is still large, and great efforts need to be made in order to reduce this difference. It is important to invite scientists from Asian countries that have not yet participated in the ILC activities to join us. Asia has been actively involved in the ILC researches in the previous years. Many of them will be reported in this Workshop/ Seminar.

14 The 13-th ACFA Plenary Meeting The 13-th ACFA Plenary Meeting November 6, 13:30, A419 The host country of IPAC’13 Chair of the Asian ILC Steering Committee To establish ILC Asian Office to facilitate collaboration among Asia Asia-wide collaboration

15 Remarks As a next generation particle accelerator that will explore some of the most fundamental questions about the universe, the ILC will crucially contribute to the human culture. The Asia has a good potentiality to contribute to the ILC with its largest accumulation of people and increasing GDP. ACFA expects that Asia will become one of the most active regions in the ILC. ACFA will make every effort to promote the collaboration on the ILC Asia-wide as well as world-wide.

16 May the CCAST ILC Accelerator Workshop and First Asian ILC R&D Seminar be a Great Success

17 Thank you
