DTSS Jr. ALTERNATE PROGRAM Established 2006 Teacher: Maegan Stanbury Youth Care Worker: Shawn Raven

OUR MISSION To create a positive, nurturing and structured environment that will foster and develop appropriate social behaviour, academic success, and personal integrity for all students.

OUR PURPOSE The staff and students of DTSS Jr. Alternative Program are dedicated to the enrichment of each individual in a positive and successful environment. Special attention is given to “at risk” students providing assistance to move either at their own pace or at an accelerated pace through their courses, redeem course credits and to master skills for appropriate behaviour inside and outside the school setting.

A MISCONCEPTION This alternative program is for “bad kids”. Many of the students become discipline problems in school due to identified learning disabilities, a lack of motivation or life skills, unfortunate life choices they have been through or circumstances beyond their control. Our small classroom size equals fewer distractions and can provide increased time with teacher when needed. We help students with intensive study in the core courses to help students be successful in meeting grade level and/or graduation requirements. This program is a flexible educational program that tries to accommodate individual needs in a variety of ways.

PHILOSOPHY S S- elf motivated T T - olerance A A - ccountability I I - ndependence R R - espect S S - uccess This is the philosophy that the class put together in the earlier stages of the course’s creation. These are goals Students strive to accomplish. These are what we like to refer to as “The steps to success!”

CIRCLE OF COURAGE Our teaching strategies and techniques are taken from “The Circle of Courage” which is based upon the traditional First Nations model of child rearing. It represents four essential building blocks for nurturing young people and developing their courage. The four principals are: ◦ The spirit of belonging- to make friends in a safe and healthy environment. ◦ The spirit of mastery- to master skills in school and life. ◦ The spirit of independence- developing good decision making skills. ◦ The spirit of generosity- helps students contribute to others and learn skills of sharing and giving.

JR. ALT. PROGRAM This class offers a good place for the students to learn about life skills and complete their courses. The students are asked to fill out a goal sheet at the beginning of each week and try their best to complete them At the end of each week the students fill out a report that records what they have completed and the progression of their goals.

OUTSIDE AGENCIES The Jr. Alt. Program works with outside agencies to provide support in such as anger management, drug and alcohol and mental health community workers The purpose is to provide support, education and awareness in all aspects of their lives not just the academic. Objective:-to provide high risk youth with knowledge so they are able to make positive choices.
