RONA BAPTIST CHURCH ONLINE MINISTRY A UNIFIED CHURCH IN FAITH AND IN FOCUS Ephesians 4:3 Greetings in the matchless name of our Risen Savior. What a joyous time to be a part of Mt. Rona Baptist Church. The Mt. Rona family invites you to worship with us at our Sunday Morning Worship Services at 7:45a.m. and 10:45a.m. as we lift up the name of Jesus Christ in “Word” coming from a powerful man of God and songs of praise from the glorious choirs of Mt. Rona. We are seeking God to do great things at Mt. Rona. Mt. Rona is a church on the move for Jesus. The Bible declares in 1 Peter 2:9, But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Rufus I. Thomas became the pastor of a small band of dedicated and faithful believers known as the Comer Memorial Baptist Church (now Mt. Rona). The church was located on 15th Street, between C and D Streets, SE. The pastor’s wife, Elizabeth Thomas, played for the choirs— senior & junior choirs. Bell Casson was the first church clerk; the late Min. Bertha Jackson was the last. The Deacon Board in the late 40’s started with about 3 deacons, but doubled in number during the 1950’s. Sis Thorne was our faithful and dedicated sexton. (Her daughter, the late Sis Mary Peterson was very active with the Flower Club.) After sojourning to several locations, in the early 1950’s the church set anchor at 1816 5th St., NW – Washington, DC. In July 1961, the church moved to 432 M St., NW – Washington, DC (home of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church). Several learned ministers assisted the pastor and taught Sunday School. God had blessed the church with a male chorus and a missionary gospel chorus. The Usher Board and the Trustee Board had expanded with dedicated leaders of tenure and of knowledge.

Rona Missionary Baptist Church In March 1968 Comer Memorial was renamed and reorganized. Deacon Collie Gregory was chairman of the Deacon Board and Doris Moore was voted in as church clerk. On Sunday, September 22, 1974 we marched to a new home at 3431 13th St., NW. Pastor R. I. Thomas, Rev. Roy L. Marrow, Chairman of Trustee Board and Annie M. Rollins, Building Fund Chairperson, led the crusade. God blessed the church with more singing ministries, a Christian Endeavor Society, a Junior Usher Board, and members seeking to learn more about the Lord. Rev. Thomas licensed Trustee R. Marrow as the first son of the church. Rev. Dewey Young and Rev. Stanley Butler were associate ministers. The late Deacon Collie Gregory was the first chairman of the Deacon Board. In November 1982, Rev. R.I. Thomas was called from labor to rest. In December 1983, Rev. Henry E. Johnson was installed as the second pastor and gave the church 7 dedicated years of service. Discipleship training started with the persistence of Francine Brooks (Blackwell) and Sister Annie Jackson to provide Christian education By 1985 the church had over 12 auxiliaries and 8 singing ministries. Rev. Roland Roy became a deacon and was soon exalted to preach the gospel; he became the second son of Mt. Rona. Rev. Herbert Odoms served faithfully and was ordained to preach by the pastor.

The gospel of a powerful and relevant ministry is at the core of attributes that identify Pastor C. A. Thompson. It is embedded in the family values he learned as a child and is fundamental to his academic and spiritual preparation as a student. Pastor Thompson's profession of Christ at an early age set him on a providential course that carried him from his home church, Greater Revelation Baptist Church, in Southeast DC to minister far and near. His pastor and mentor, Reverend Elijah Marshall, along with the anointing of the Holy Spirit, helped to nourish and develop his gift of preaching and teaching. I am so thankful for what God is doing at Mt. Rona and the powerful blessing we are experiencing in our church just because God is Good. Come visit us, and when you get tired of visiting, joinn us. Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.
