November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Where to start? The fist thing you need to ask is “How many customers are likely in the next 18 to 24 months?” A few or many???

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 WISP Types We basically find three different types of WISPs. Small Rural (300 customers or less) Large Urban (more than 300 customers) Campus (many customers but confined area)

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Small/Rural DSSS –Maximum of three WPOPs Strengths –Cheap –Long range –Multiple equipment choices –Fast –Able to be programmed away from known interference Weaknesses –Everyone can buy the radios everywhere –Cheap –Long range –Susceptible to narrow band interference

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Large/Urban FHSS –Maximum of 12 WPOPs Strengths –Scalable –Dynamically avoids interference –Secure –Robust –Obscure Weaknesses –More proprietary –Not as fast as DSSS –Expensive

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Campus FHSS/DSSS –Coverage zones must be tightly controled Strengths –Scalable –Dynamically avoids interference –Secure –Robust –Obscure Weaknesses –More proprietary –Not as fast as DSSS –Expensive

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Costs There are several levels of quality and security for this equipment. As would be expected the better the gear the more the costs.

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Rural WISP WPOP Estimate This is for a middle of the road DSSS system: Access Point: $600 Amplifier: $500 Antenna: $200 Cables: $150 Labor: $500 CPE: $400+

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Urban WISP WPOP Estimate This is for an upper level FHSS system: Access Point: $2500 Antenna: $600 Cables: $100 Labor: $500 CPE: $950+ Note: In most populated markets there will need to be at least two of these, 4 to 6 per broadcast site is normally easier to deal with.

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Campus or Industrial Zone Estimate Access Point: $600 to $3000+ Antenna: $100+ Amplifier: $500??? (may not need/want) Cables: $100+ Labor: $500+++ CPE: $100+

November 26 2001Marlon K. Schafer, CTO--KMS Wireless (509) 982-2181 Conclusion There is a real and tangible need for broadband services today and it’s increasing daily. You can save money or make money be delivering broadband access to your employees or customers. Just make sure you don’t waste your money by putting in a system that won’t work or costs more than people can/will pay for.
