Dr. Sombat Teekasap The Chairman of Renewable Energy Industry Club The Federation of Thai Industries E-mail: teekasap@hotmail.com Website: www.royalequipment.co.th

The Renewable Energy Industry Club consists of 7 chapters according to their renewable energy business types. There are more than 50 members and advisors from both Thai and international universities and other organizations which are responsible for renewable energy.

Solar CellWind BioMass Biodiesel Ethanol BioGas Waste to Energy

● Business opportunities are still open to ‘Technology Developers’. ● Some of renewable energy, i.e., biomass, bio-fuel, etc. are depended on the agricultural countries, of which are the earth’s huge food producers. ● Developed countries take advantages on these opportunities to search for channel to sell their technology and monopoly on concession contracts for renewable energy in the developing (transitional) countries.

Manufacturers in Thailand have invested in solar cell production more than 6 billion baht which aimed to produce both Solar Module Fabrication and Solar Cell Manufacture. However, the marketing of the solar cell is foreign market due to the government does not have the policy to support local market.

The low-speed wind turbines at 2.5-3.0 m./sec. have been produced in Thailand for commercial purposes. Its capacity range from 100 W to 5 kW and will be developed up to 50 kW soon. For the high capacity wind turbine such as the project of Ministry of Energy, which has been installed in the southern of Thailand, is imported from foreign country. This business still has a few investors.

There are a lot of biomass potentials for Thailand, there can generated up to 1,700 MW or more. Expected all biomass in Thailand can be generate for 3,700 MW.

(MSW: Municipal Solid Waste) Thailand (MSW) about 40,000 tons per day could generate electricity of about 400 MW. At present electricity generate are less than 5 MW. Ministry of Energy (MoE) had already adjusted the ADDER to increase motivation to the investors on waste to energy projects.

There are more than 10 entrepreneurs who fabricate biogas plants. More than 500 factories (small, medium and large) operate biogas system throughout Thailand. Most of the biogas plants which can run successfully uses waste water from tapioca production, waste from pig farm and food factory. The Ministry of Energy have set future target on electricity generation from biogas as 120 MW.

The Ministry of Energy (MOE) has set ethanol production for blending with gasoline oil at about 2.4 million litres per day in the Year 2011. So far, there are 10 ethanol manufacturers with total production capacity of 2.5 million litres per day. However, ethanol demand for the blending are only 1.2 million litres per day. The private sectors expect that total production capacity of ethanol will be not less than 3.9 million litres per day, by the end of Year 2010.

Thai Government has to subsidise B100 producers nearly 20 million Baht per day, in order to have biodiesel B2 and B5 being sold in Thai local market. There are 12 B100-producers in Thailand, with total production capacity of 4 million litres per day. The Government is enable to purchase biodiesel at 1.7 million litres per day. Fresh palm is also one of the key factors that causes the price of CPO higher than the global market’s CPO price. In the future, we have to look for another oil corps to produce biodiesel replacing of palm oil accordingly.
