A bit about ANDS  In existence since 2009  Around 40 staff  We do  primarily engage with institutions  cover all disciplines  provide a range of national services  seek to contribute to the national policy agenda  We don’t  provide storage 3ands.org.au

ANDS enables the transformation of: Data that are: Unmanaged Disconnected Invisible Single use To Structured Collections that are: Managed Connected Findable Reusable so that Australian researchers can easily publish, discover, access and use/re-use research data. CC-BY @atreloar4

Enabling change… To enable change in how researchers deal with their data, the new paradigm needs to be  Possible  Encouraged/Required  Adopted/Embraced CC-BY @atreloar5

Possible  Storage  institutional storage and national Research Data Storage Infrastructure  Ability to manage institutional research data outputs  ANDS Research Metadata Stores program  Ability to count citations to data  ANDS is taking part in T-R DCI pilot CC-BY @atreloar6

Encouraged  The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research 2007  "Research data should be made available for use by other researchers unless this is prevented by ethical, privacy or confidentiality matters".  The Code is the instrument of the major funders (ARC, NHMRC) and Universities Australia  but is mostly aspirational and not enforced CC-BY @atreloar7

8 Encouraged  Gov 2.0 report declares that public sector data (including research data) be made openly available  ARC changes its Funding Rules for 2015 to require an outline of plans for management of data  Chief Scientist argues for the importance of “sharing high quality research data”  Use of data citation metrics possible in future

Adopted/Embraced  Researchers routinely ask for/expect to get DOIs for data that they deposit  Researchers routinely cite the data they used for their research when publishing  Researchers believe that having their data available will benefit them directly/indirectrly  Researchers care about their data citation metrics CC-BY @atreloar9

Thanks/Questions  Thanks go to Greg.Laughlin@ands.org.au for providing some of the contentGreg.Laughlin@ands.org.au  andrew.treloar@ands.org.au andrew.treloar@ands.org.au  @atreloar 11CC-BY @atreloar
