Program Overview Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) provide valuable NO COST assessments to small and mid-size manufactures nationwide. Assess plant facilities on: energy efficiency improvements, waste minimization and pollution prevention, and productivity improvements 26 Participating Schools with over 25 years of experience nationwide
3
Participating Universities National assessment coverage with 150 mile coverage Lehigh University
4
Became an DOE-IAC Center in September 2000. Team of Research Engineers and Scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students under the guidance of ME faculty. Annual Assessment Done: 25 per year. Assessments performed in PA, NJ, DE, and MD. Lehigh University IAC
5
Eligibility for Assessment.... Companies with Standard Industrial Codes (SIC) 20-39 Gross annual sales below $100 million a year. Fewer than 500 employees at the plant site. Annual energy bills more than $100,000 and less than $2 million. No professional in-house staff to perform the assessment.
6
Preliminary plant background information review Plant visit – resulting in assessment recommendations Review of plant data and assessment calculations Assessment report Implementation follow-up Assessment Process
7
Assessment Areas Areas Audited at the Plant: –Energy usage (electricity bills, fuel consumption) –Energy intense equipment (electrical motors, compressors, air handlers) –Processes and related equipment (boilers- combustion, heat exchangers and cooling towers- cooling) –Buildings and other plant areas (insulation, lighting, HVAC) –Waste generation and disposal –Production process
8
Assessment Report Companies receive a detailed and confidential report within 60 days of the Plant Visit. Report consists of: –Plant background information –Energy and resources management information –Assessment recommendations (including detailed engineering calculations) –Implementation savings $$ and estimated payback periods.
9
Typical Assessment Report
10
Companies –Average facilities save $55,000 annually, post assessment –Efficiency improvements in process engineering and manufacturing Universities –Development of local industry relationships –Students gain industrial, hands-on experience U.S. Taxpayers –More competitive and productive midsize industry –Enhanced energy security and environmental benefits Benefits of IAC Assessments
