1  Be prepared to take a pretest on the next unit- Nonfiction.  Take out a sheet of paper and label it- Nonfiction pretest #1-9.  You may not know all of the answers, but try your best and the test will help us teach over the next few weeks.  Read your nonfiction book after you have finished.

3 Main Idea and supporting details: Disappearing vocabulary The main idea is the most important idea about a topic that a particular text conveys.

6  You and your group will focus on one of the text structures:  Read the lesson, passages, and answer the questions in complete sentences.  In each block, answer your questions and draw a symbol or graphic to help you remember the text structure.  After your section is completed, you will meet with other groups and teach your section.

9 Summarize Definition: restate the author’s ideas in your own words Sentence: When you summarize, you write a shorter version of the text. Synonyms: shorten, main idea, summary, main details

11 1. Read silently for 15 minutes. This will get you immersed within the book and able to understand the exposition(setting, background, character). 2. Be prepared to record golden lines, comments, and connections as you are reading with post-it notes(minimum of two!)

12  Mark your pages you chose and comments with the post-it notes.  Take turns reading your connections and thoughts.  Each person will choose a question from the envelope.  Write your question and answer in complete sentences in your journal.  Be prepared to share with your group, and then the class.

13  Warm-up: Brainstorm your favorite monsters from fiction and nonfiction.  Word splash- Use the following words in a creative paragraph:  Expert, dinosaur, predator, species, fossil, extinct.

14  As we read, look out for text features such as subheadings, captions, and graphic aids.

15  After reading, your group will be assigned one section of the article.
