The story of LIZZIE BORDEN

AUGUST 4, 1892 11:10 AM ANDREW BORDEN FOUND DEAD IN HIS HOME! AT 70, ANDREW BORDEN (ONE OF THE RICHEST MEN IN FALLS RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS) LIVED WITH HIS SECOND WIFE, ABBY, AND HIS 2 UNMARRIED DAUGHTERS-- LIZZIE AND EMMA.

LIZZIE WAS THE FIRST TO DISCOVER HER FATHER’S BODY… HE’D BEEN STRUCK WITH AN AXE 11 TIMES IN THE HEAD (HIS NOSE WAS SEVERED AND ONE EYE WAS CUT IN HALF)…

LIZZIE CALLED FOR THE ONLY OTHER PERSON IN THE HOUSE, THE MAID (BRIDGET) WHO WAS RESTING UPSTAIRS AFTER WASHING THE WINDOWS (ON THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR)… BRIDGET RAN TO GET DR. BOWEN—THE NEIGHBOR.

ANOTHER NEIGHBOR HEARD THE COMMOTION AND SENT FOR THE POLICE. This neighbor went upstairs with Bridget and discovered the body of Mrs. Borden (Abby).

MRS. BORDEN HAD BEEN STRUCK 18 TIMES FROM BEHIND. SUPPOSEDLY NO ONE HEARD HER 5 FOOT TALL, 200 POUND BODY HIT THE FLOOR.

Abby was killed about 9:30 AM; Andrew was killed around 11:00 AM.

POLICE FOUND 4 HATCHETS IN THE BASEMENT. ONE WAS WITHOUT A HANDLE AND COVERED IN ASHES. THIS WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE MURDER WEAPON…

THIS IS THE POLICE PHOTO OF LIZZIE, THE SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER, WHO WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH THE MURDERS.

EMMA, WHO HAD RETURNED FROM OUT OF TOWN, HIRED A LAWYER. LIZZIE PLEADED NOT GUILTY AND WAS TAKEN TO A NEARBY JAIL WITH FACILITIES FOR WOMEN.

LIZZIE’S TRIAL BEGAN IN JUNE OF 1893 AND LASTED 14 DAYS. LIZZIE DID NOT TESTIFY, AND HER INQUEST TESTIMONY WAS RULED INADMISSIBLE BECAUSE SHE HAD NOT BEEN CHARGED WHEN HER STATEMENT WAS GIVEN.

WITNESSES TESTIFIED THAT HER FATHER HAD DRAWN UP A NEW WILL LEAVING HALF HIS ESTATE TO ABBY AND DIVIDING THE REST BETWEEN EMMA AND LIZZIE.

Another witness said that Lizzie had tried to buy prussic acid (a poison), but the judge ruled this to be irrelevant and inadmisable.

PROSECUTERS BROUGHT IN THE SKULLS OF THE BORDENS AND FIT THE HATCHET TO THE FRACTURES…

Witnesses for the defense claimed to have seen a “mysterious man” near the Borden home. Emma testified that her sister had no motive…

ON JUNE 20, 1893 THE JURY CAME BACK WITH A VERDICT OF “NOT GUILTY” ON ALL CHARGES…

LIZZIE BEGAN CALLING HERSELF LIZBETH AND REFUSED TO LEAVE TOWN ALTHOUGH SHE WAS OSTRACIZED. EMMA MOVED OUT AFTER HER SISTER BECAME FRIENDS WITH AN ACTRESS NAMED NANCE O’NEILL.

THE ENTIRE FAMILY IS BURIED IN THE LOCAL CEMETARY.

THE HOUSE IS NOW A BED AND BREAKFAST… GO VISIT, BUT WATCH OUT FOR GHOSTS!!! (by the way, it has its own episode of Ghost Hunters!)

THEORIES… 1.LIZZIE DID IT! 2.LIZZIE AND BRIDGET CONSPIRED… 3. BRIDGET DID IT ALONE! 4.EMMA DID IT! 5. ILLEGITIMATE SON WILLIAM DID IT! 6. JOSE CORRIERA? (PORTUGUESE IMMIGRANT WHO KILLED BERTHA MANCHESTER WITH AN AXE)

TV MOVIE “THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN” STARRED ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY.

Why she couldn’t be guilty… -The CULT OF DOMESTICITY defined women’s roles as in the “sphere” of home and children. -Women were the moral leaders in the home and educators of children. -These ideas allowed women to be part of the push for reform and change in this country…

so… She was a woman (they didn’t do such things) She was a woman and not physically capable of the brutality of the murder She was a woman and a moral leader (sunday school teacher) She was a woman from the upper section of society …SHE WAS INNOCENT
