Resource type Choose one from a controlled vocabulary Dataset series (project) A set of surveys linked by a common purpose. Dataset A survey/ cruise/GI Layer, may include work undertaken over several years Service A spatial data service e.g. View service, download service, transformation service Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Identification elements File Identifier One must be provided. Identifies the metadata file. Recommended to use a hexidecimal code for this identifier e.g. 79557726-b60a-4cf3-a8fd-9799c603d4dc Parent ID One must only be provided for a dataset if is part of a series with a metadata record. Identifies the series record that the dataset is related to. e.g. 79557726-b60a-4cf3-a8fd-9799c603d4dc Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Resource Title One must be provided The title is used to provide a precise description of the resource. It is advised that acronyms and abbreviations are reproduced in full. Recommended format: 'Date' 'Originating organization/programme' 'Location' 'Type of survey'. e.g. 1992 Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) North Sea 2m beam trawl survey. 6 Identification elements Alternative title Several may be provided Other names by which the resource may be known as. May include short name, other name, acronym or alternative language title. e.g. MarLIN Volunteer Sighting records. Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Identification elements Resource language One or more must be selected from a controlled vocabulary The language used in the data resource e.g. For datasets in English the term is English and the code is eng Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Identification elements Abstract One must be provided. Clear and brief statement of resource content. What has been recorded, what form the data takes, what purpose it was collected for, any limiting information, i.e. caveats on the use and interpretation of the data such as gaps in a time series or missing data (use and access limitations are covered in other elements). Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Identification elements Resource locator One must be provided if resource is available online. Resource locator url The URL (web address) and must include the http:// at the start of the address e.g.http://www.dassh.ac.uk/DASSHDT000345 Resource locator name A name for the website e.g. DASSH view and download service Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Identification elements Unique resource identifier One must be provided. This is a unique code for the resource. Code A unique code. No spaces allowed, e.g. 5639287 e.g. WMS-2001_ESD01 Code Space A URL (web address) for the originating organisation e.g. http://www.mba.ac.uk e.g. http://ukho.gov.uk Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Classification elements Temporal references One of these elements must be provided Temporal extent Begin -The start date End - The end date if it exists e.g. 2011-04-23 Date of publication (of the resource) Date of last revision (of the resource) Date of creation (of the resource) These dates are made up of two parts; Date type – from an ISO controlled vocabulary e.g. Creation, Revision or Publication Date – the date e.g. 2011-02-19 Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Classification elements Spatial reference system One must be provided for datasets and series and for services where applicable Describes the system of spatial referencing (typically a coordinate reference system) used in the resource. This should be derived from the EPSG register e.g. National Grid of Great Britain – urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::27700 Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Classification elements Topic category At least one must be provided for datasets and series (not for services) e.g. biota INSPIRE theme At least one must be provided e.g. geology Keywords At least one should be provided Strongly recommend the use of the BODC Parameter Discovery Vocabulary e.g. Zoobenthos taxonomy-related counts Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Classification elements Extent Several may be included Keywords selected from controlled vocabularies to describe the spatial extent of the resource. Recommend using the Seavox vocabulary also can use others. e.g. Irish Sea and St Georges Channel Vertical extent keywords At least one must be provided if a vertical spatial reference system not included. e.g. Sediment boundary Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Classification elements Geographic Bounding box(es) One or more must be provided. Represent the geographical bounding box(s) of the resource's extent in decimal degrees. Multiple bounding boxes are allowed to describe datasets or series which have a disparate geographic coverage. West bounding longitude East bounding longitude North bounding latitude South bounding latitude Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Vertical extent information Minimum Value One must be provided Can be positive or negative Maximum Value One must be provided Can be positive or negative Vertical coordinate reference system One must be provided. Must be referenced e.g. EPSG registry e.g. urn:ogc:def:crs:EPSG::5701 We have just created a CRS for ‘sea level’ Classification elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Limitations on public access One must be provided Any limitations on access to the data e.g. Freely available, e.g. Full access restricted, public acces at 10KM resolution available Conditions applying for access and use One must be provided Any conditions on use of the resource e.g. Not suitable for navigation e.g. Available under UKHO licence e.g. Freely available under DASSH Terms and Conditions Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Additional information source Several may be provided Any references to external information that are considered useful, e.g. project website, report, journal article may be recorded. e.g. Malthus, T.J., Harries, D.B., Karpouzli, E., Moore, C.G., Lyndon, A.R., Mair, J.M., Foster-Smith, B.,Sotheran, I. and Foster-Smith, D. (2006). Biotope mapping of the Sound of Harris, Scotland. Scottish Natural Heritage Commissioned Report No. 212 (ROAME No. F01AC401/2). e.g. http://www.cefas.co.uk/publications/files/datarep4 2.pdf Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Lineage One must be provided Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data used and can include data quality statements. The lineage element can include information about: source material; data collection methods used; data processing methods used; quality control processes. Please indicate any data collection standards used. Quality of lineage important! Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley INSPIRE Conformance Specification At least one must be provided if claiming INSPIRE conformance Title – of specification Date type – recommend using ‘publication’ Date Degree of conformity True or False Explanation (C) e.g. All mandatory and conditional items were completed

Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley Spatial resolution One must be provided (units metres) where distance can be specified. The average distance (i.e. resolution) between sampling locations in metres. For example, if a dataset was composed of a grid of stations which have an average distance between stations of 2 km then 2000 metres should be recorded. e.g. 1000

Quality and use elements Image copyright © Becky Seeley Frequency of update One must be provided if known from a controlled vocabulary. This describes the frequency that the resource (data set) is modified or updated and should be included if known. e.g. monthly e.g. notplanned

Contact elements Contacts for the metadata Who manages the metadata Data custodian(s) Who manages the resource The resource originator(s) Who created the resource Distributor(s) Who else distributes the resource Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Contact elements Responsible party sub elements Individual name Job Position (recommended). Organization name Postal address (recommended) Telephone number (recommended) Facsimile number Email address Responsible party role From a controlled vocabulary e.g. Custodian, Point of contact Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Metadata elements Metadata date The date the metadata record was last updated e.g. 2011-03-19 Metadata standard name e.g. Medin Discovery Standard Metadata standard version e.g. 2.3.4 Metadata language e.g. eng Image copyright © Becky Seeley

Coupled resource Identifies the data resource(s) used by the service if these are available separately. You should supply the Unique resource identifiers of the relevant datasets.
