16 Rock Music  After WWII, southern African Americans migrated to northern cities bringing a new musical influence to urban culture  This turned into the Rhythm and Blues music of B.B. King and other similar musicians  “Rock and Roll” fully emerged in 1955 with Bill Haley’s recording of “Rock Around the Clock”  During the 1960s, this early style of Rock and Roll became increasingly electrified and amplified.  Today, Rock music is very mainstreamed and some say that (today’s) rock in the 21st century sounds much as it has in previous decades.

18 Rap and Hip Hop Music  Rap evolved from many different music genres:  Gospel, jazz, blues, salsa, electro rock, pop, and Caribbean  With that mixture, urban African American youth invented their own music  Originally, rap gave a voice to disenfranchised youth  Some rap lyrics have been seen as obscene, bigoted, and socially irresponsible  This is not always true  it has lyrics that address hard realities of life, and personal and social messages

19 Beginning of Rap  One early DJ, “Kool Herc,” came to America from Jamaica, where spinning records was a highly developed art.  Kool Herc often used to record players and two versions of the same record to “loop” short sections and create break beats.  Break beats occur when other instruments in the band stop playing while drums and bass play alone.  These break beats would loop one section over and over, would be played on two different turn tables  These extended break beats became very popular and eventually became the foundations of rhyming and “rapping.”
