What is a Confederation? Loose alliance of states (or countries) that give limited power to a central authority. What didn’t the Articles of Confederation allow the central gov’t to do? No power to enact taxes, no enforcement of laws, passing laws required 9/13 states; amending the articles required 13/13, no national court system and no executive

What is Separation of Powers and give 3 examples! Idea to give specific powers to different areas of the government, so that no “branch” is too powerful Legislative (Congress) – writes the laws Executive (President) – enforces the laws or carries them out Judicial (federal courts) – determine outcome of disputes based off laws.

Define Checks and Balances and give THREE examples Ability of one branch to stop/oversee the actions of another President can veto a law Congress makes (it then usually is dead) Congress with a 2/3 vote can override a veto (law is now in effect) President can nominate judges, the Senate confirms (approves them)

Define Incorporation and give one example!!!! Process of using the 14 th amendment to apply the Bill of Rights to the 50 states. It uses the equal protection clause and due process clause of the 14 th to do it. The first amendment’s Freedom of Speech cannot be denied by the states because the federal courts says everyone’s right must be “equally protected” by the states.
