Setting Definition: time and place of a story It can be used to tell about the characters It can be used to set the atmosphere

Characters Definition: people or animals in a literary work Types – Round: convincing, true to life – Dynamic: undergoes a change – Flat: only 1 or 2 personality traits, shallow, stereotyped – Static: does not change – Protagonist: – Antagonist: main character character that opposes the main character

Plot Definition: a series or sequence of events in the story Types – Exposition: start, before action begins – Rising Action: series of conflicts that lead to climax – Climax: turning point, intense – Falling Action: action that follows climax – Resolution: conclusion, problem solved *think triangle!

Conflict Definition: a struggle between two forces Types – Human vs Human – Human vs Nature – Human vs Society – Human vs Self

Point of View Definition: the perspective from which a story is being told Types – Omniscient: told by author – Limited Omniscient: told by character in the story, third person point of view – First Person: told from point of a character, uses “I”

Theme Definition: central message of the story It can be directly stated or implied

Symbolism Definition: represents an idea, quality, or thing
