The Periodic Table

How is the Periodic Table arranged? a)The elements in the periodic table are arranged by atomic number. Atomic numbers increase from left to right. b)It is also arranged by classes of elements – metals, semimetals, nonmetals, and inert gases.

What is a Period? a)A period is a horizontal row of elements that contains a series of different elements. b)The properties of the elements change from left to right. Metals are on the left, semimetals in the middle, nonmetals on the right next to the inert gases. c)There are 7 periods. Period 1 has 2 elements, periods 2 & 3 have 8, periods 4 & 5 have 16, period 6 has 32.

What is a group? a)The vertical columns are called groups. b)A group is also called a family. c)Elements in a group have similar characteristics. For example, elements in group 1 react violently with water while elements in group 2 react very slowly or not at all. d)There are 18 groups. Lanthanides and actinides do not belong in these groups.

METALS a)Metals are good conductors of electric currents and heat b)Some physical properties of metals are malleability, ductility, and conductivity c) Some chemical properties of metals are reactivity and rust d)They are alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, and lanthanides

What are Nonmetals? a)Nonmetals lack most of the properties of metals. They are the opposite of metals. b)They are poor conductors of electric current and heat. c) Solid nonmetals are dull and brittle.

SEMI-METALS a)Semi metals have some properties of metals and nonmetals. b)All semi-metals are solid at room temperature. c)They are brittle, hard, and somewhat reactive. d)THE MOST USEFUL PROPERTY OF SEMI-METALS IS THEIR VARYING ABILLTIY TO CONDUCT ELECTRIC CURRENT

What are Inert Gases? a)All of the elements in group 18 are inert gases or noble gases. b)Inert gases do NOT ordinarily form compounds. c)INERT GASES TEND TO BE UNREACTIVE d)They do not usually gain, lose, or share electrons. e)All the earth inert gases exist in earth ‘s atmosphere.

The Noble Gases

How many letters are in an elements name? a)One or two. b)The first letter is Capitalized. c)The second letter is lower case.

In a compound / mixture, how can you tell if it is a new element? a)Elements start with a capital letter. b)CO = Carbon & oxygen c)Co = Cobalt

Homework: a)Due Tuesday: Draw the bohr’s models and the periodic plates of element #1 through #5 b)Due Wednesday: Draw the bohr’s models and the periodic plates of element #6 through #10 c)Due Thursday: Draw the bohr’s models and the periodic plates of element #11 through #15 d)Due Friday: Weekly Vocab: Element, Periodic Table, Carbon, Inert Gas

Musical Chairs: a)Number your paper #1 through #10 b)Pick a card. c)Write the card letter and the information on your own paper. d)You will get 2 minutes to find a person who has a card with information for your same element AND write down their letter and information on your paper. e)Put the cards back in the correct bucket and start again.
