5. Witchcraft The use of magic especially for evil purposes. After 1604 anyone found guilty of being a witch was put to death. This was usually done by the local people. Year 8

7. Invasion The act of invading with armed forces. The Normans invaded France taking over an area of land and they named it Normandy. Year 8

9. Conflict Conflict is an opposition between ideas or interests resulting in a struggle or a battle. Year 9

11. Nomadic A member of a group of people who have no fixed home and move according to the seasons from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land. Year 9

13. Category A class or group of things or people with some quality or qualities in common. A specifically defined division in a system of classification; a class. A general class of ideas, terms, or things that mark divisions within a conceptual scheme. Year 10

15. Boycott To refuse to deal with an organization or country as a protest against it’s action or policy. On April 1, 1933, the Nazis carried out the first nationwide, planned action against Jews; a boycott targeting Jewish businesses and professionals. Year 11

17. Internment Interment is being held in prison with or without charge during a civil war or political struggle. In 1972 internment was introduced as an emergency measure to deal with the IRA. Year 11 Year 11

19. Communism Communism is the belief that private ownership should be abolished and all work and property should be shared by the community. Communism is a political movement based upon the writings of Karl Marx who advocates communism. Year 12

21. Segregation The practice or policy of creating separate facilities within the same society for the use of a racial or minority group. Where the black community in America were set apart from the white community (separate toilets and buses). Year 12

23. Democracy Democracy is the system of government or organization in which the citizens or members choose leaders or make other important decisions by voting. Year 13

26. Armistice An agreement between opposing armies to stop fighting. Armistice Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War on November 11 th 1918. Year 13

28. Partition The division of a country into two or more independent countries with separate self-governing bodies. The Irish Partition in 1920 separating the north of Ireland from the south of Ireland. Year 10

30. Historiography Historiography is the study of different peoples’ views on events in history. The writing of history based on a critical analysis, evaluation, and selection of authentic source materials and composition of these materials into a narrative subject to scholarly methods of criticism. Year 14

32. Resistance An organization fighting for national liberty in a country under enemy occupation. Year 14
