Table of Contents ZTitle: Geologic Maps ZPage #: 20 ZDate: 9/28/2012

Objective ZStudents will be able to compare and contrast a Geologic Map to other kinds of maps. ZStudents will be able to interpret scales on a map.

Word of the Day ZRatio - A relationship between two similar things expressed by a number. ZGradient - A rate of inclination: Slope.

Geologic Maps Geologic Map - Used to show distribution of, arrangement, and types of rocks located beneath soil.  Show different kinds of rocks.  Often put on top of topographic maps and color coded by type of rock formation.  Different colors are used for different rock formations.  Symbols are used to show structures and mineral deposits.

Geologic Maps Map Legends (Key) - Explains what symbols on a map represent. Examples: =Highway =Building = Railroad

Geologic Maps Map Scales - The ratio between distances on a map and the actual distances on the surface of the Earth.  Used to measure distances on on a map.  3 Kinds: 1.Verbal Scale 2.Graphic Scale 3.Fractional Scale

Geologic Maps Verbal Scale - A statement - “One centimeter equals one kilometer.” Graphic Scale - **The most common kind** A line that represents a certain distance. Looks like a ruler - Kilometers from Gradients Problem Solving Lab

Geologic Maps Fractional Scale - Distance is expressed as a ratio - “1 : 150” Means 1 unit on the map represents 150 units on the surface of the earth.  Units on each side of the ratio must be the same.  A large ratio = a large area  A small ratio = a small area
