English/Language Arts Standard 5.3 Comprehension and analysis of literary text Voice Level 1 Materials needed: The Curious Garden by Peter Brown Tri-fold Pencil Laptop for extension activity As a group, read, watch, or listen to The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. Individually, or with a partner, complete the tri-fold that is in the binder. Be sure your name(s) is on the tri-fold and turn in. The 5 Elements of a Story Puzzle Literacy Connection: Comprehension
5.3.2 Identify the main problem or conflict of the plot. 5.3.3 Contrast the actions, motives, and appearances of characters in a work of fiction. 5.3.4 Understand that theme refers to the central idea or meaning of a selection and recognize themes. 5.3.8 Identify the speaker or narrator in a selection and tell whether the speaker or narrator is a character involved in the story. The 5 Elements of a Story Puzzle Literacy Connection: Comprehension Voice Level 1 Materials needed: Picture book Six puzzle pieces, each with a different element of a story on it Marker Tape Colored pencils Laptop, only if you need to watch flocabulary video As a group, read the picture book in the station basket (each group will read a different book). Together determine: plot, setting, character, theme, conflict, and narrator. Fill out the puzzle pieces found in the binder using the black marker. NOTE: If you have trouble remembering what the definitions of the 5 elements of a story are, review: Put the six puzzle pieces together to form a gardening picture. Print this link.( Extension Activity: Draw a picture to visually show Global Warming. Important things to include in station task sheet; Star in corner that represent station color, Project connection, Standards with gold words representing assessment piece, Voice level, Literacy connection, tasks, and extension activity. Skills needed based on last Acuity Test Acuity Practice Materials Laptop, pencil, and record sheet Noise level 0 Gather all materials. Go to website and click on Acuity Log in and click practice. As you are going through the questions write down any skills you are struggling with. Record those skills on the records sheet. 3 Minutes prior to the end of rotations completely fill out the records sheet and turn in.
