4 Happy Word Wednesday – Week 2  AM/IM  AM/IM (Latin word for amare meaning “to love”)  Amiable:  Amiable: Friendly  Amicable:  Amicable: Friendly, Peaceful (more formal than “amiable”)  Enamored:  Enamored: Charmed with love; infatuated  Inimical:  Inimical: Hostile, unfriendly (“in-” negates the meaning)  Paramour:  Paramour: A secret love that is not allowed by law or custom (“par-” means “by or through”) Think “amigo” in Spanish!

5 Argumentative Writing Boot Camp Game Get a white board, expo marker, and tissue for today’s activity. Be very careful with these boards!  Directions for the activity:  In your teams, you will answer the question on the board as quickly as possible on your white boards. The first team to call out their team name and hold up the white board with the correct answer wins. Spelling and legibility count! If no one is correct, the team that answered first gets the point.  The winning team earns a prize.

23  Restate the thesis  The thesis needs to be rephrased  A connection with the audience has been already, rephrase to reflect that connection.  Summary of Points  Recap on the major arguments of the essay.  Explain how all of them are connected.  Context or “Clincher”  Explain why your topic is timely or important  Tell the reader what you want him or her to do  Remind the reader why the topic matters to them Conclusion

26 These are various options for your hook, but a more sophisticated hook acknowledges a detail in your argument and expounds on a connection.  1. Surprising Statistic  Something that conveys something about the topic being written about.  2. Interesting Quote  One the relates to your topic and contributes to your topic.  3. Rhetorical Questions  Pose a question to get your audience thinking about your topic in a different way.  4. Anecdote/Story  Create a personal connection to the topic. Ex. If you are advocating for public transportation, you might tell an interesting story about a good experience with public transportation. Hook

All of these support my overall argument that everyone should take public transportation.  Your claims should always be proving your thesis! Claim

40  Commentary explains why your evidence is relevant and how it proves your claim/thesis.  Evidence=If 1 in 4 people took public transportation, pollution would be reduced by 34%.  Commentary: By reducing the amount of pollution in the air, the environment would be able to thrive without struggling to survive. Considering people sustain life based off of the condition the environment, the public has a vested interest in the conservation of the world. Public transportation has the ability to preserve the very environment that allows the population to live. Commentary
