Flashback Definition Returning to an earlier time in a story for the purpose of making something clearer in the present Example Sammi stopped in her tracks aware of something chasing her; she had to get away. She returned to the current day from her memories.

Multiple-meaning word Definition A word that has more than one meaning. Example Pen Writing utensil Animal holding cell

Symbolism Definition The use of a concrete object to represent an idea. Example The rose is a symbol of love.

Attitude Definition The feelings of a character as reflected in the selection. Example Billy always had a evil smile, and he always acts like the king of the world.

Author’s purpose Definition The reason the author wrote the story. Example Janna wrote the story to inform people how to hula.

Character Definition Person or animal that something happens to in the story. Example Kait won the supreme Queen Title in the pageant.

Conclusion Definition A decision reached based on information presented in a selection. Example Shane finally figured out what happened to his painting.

Dialogue Definition The written conversation between two or more characters. Example Jim yelled to the running puppy, “Slow down Hannah! Wait come back!” “arf woof wooooof,” Hannah barked in return.
