3 One Way Tickets Only  As More Cheep Land Became Available, immigrants would make their ocean voyage in Steerage to save money  Conditions in Steerage were filthy spreading sickness, disease, and death along the journey  Immigrants from Britain, Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, and China came to the United States to start a new life

4 Tug of War Push Factors  Overcrowding in Europe  Large Farms Pushed Small Farmers out of Europe  Crop Failures and Starvation led to People Leaving Europe  Artisans began to seek factory jobs in America  People Looked to Escape Political Turmoil Pull factors  Better Freedoms in America  American Prosperity increased Luring immigrants from Europe  Land was more Available in the United States

5 Den-Mark’s the Spot  People from Scandinavia (Sweden, Denmark and Norway) bought Cheap land in the United States  Though their countries tried to prevent leaving, they would settle in the Midwest due to similar climates and became farmers

6 Where’s the Bratwurst?  German Immigrants also moved to the Midwest to farm lands similar to Germany  Germans would also try to set up communities in Texas but would have to survive poor harvests  German Artisans also came to America to find prosperity, including John Bausch and Henry Laumb, who became very wealthy  Germans would bring us Traditions like Christmas trees, Gymnasiums, Kindergartens, Hamburgers, and the Frankfurter

7 We need a Holiday Inn…Express  Many Jewish Immigrants began to find success in America as Salesmen in Mining Towns or Store owners in Big Cities  Alexander Rothschild would open up a small grocery store in Connecticut and turn his profits into a popular Hotel Chain

8 Irish Springs in America  Irish Settlers came to America to escape poverty, persecution, and to find land and freedom  After the Potato Famine Hit Ireland, over 2 million people would leave the homeland to avoid death and starvation  With little Money Irish settlers stayed in Port Towns making up 1/4 th of many big city populations  Many Irish settlers were uneducated and took the hardest jobs, like building railroads, washing, or working as servants  The Irish would compete with free blacks for the low paying jobs that nobody else wanted

9 Sardines in a can  As Americans and Immigrants flocked to the cities, they would soon face overcrowding  Housing shortages led greedy landlords to pack people into small apartments leading to disease and crime  Big Cities lacked proper police, fire, and sewer support for their growing populations  As Immigrants came to the cities politicians would start to assist them in settling, in exchange for their vote

10 VERY UNINFORMED  As Immigration increased, prejudices began to put immigrants in danger  Nativists looked to protect America’s Native Born Citizens and formed groups to discriminate against all immigrants forming the Know Nothing Party  The Know Nothing Party formed to ban Catholics and immigrants from holding office, a 21 year waiting period to become a citizen, and a cut in Immigration  The Party would elect 6 governors but disagreements on slavery would lead to the end of the party
