So you think you might want to be an Engineer? John Gebhard Overhaul Engineering Site Manager Rolls-Royce Engine Services, Inc.
2
Meet the Presenter… John Gebhard Originally from South Milwaukee, WI Brother of your Assistant Principal, Jamie Lee Interesting fact about me: -I was in one episode of Diner’s Drive-Ins and Dives in 2011 What do I do in my free time? -Golfing -Biking -Running -Triathlons 2
3
Places that I have lived… 3 Milwaukee, Wisconsin Indianapolis, Indiana Derby, United Kingdom Orinda, California
4
Why did I become an Engineer? I always had a passion for designing “things” and building “things” I believe that everything we have in life can always be better than it is today 4

My College Years… Undergraduate Experiences: -Started in Mechanical Engineering at UW-Milwaukee (1996-2001) -Avid member of ASME – American Society of Mechanical Engineers -Lived at home until my junior year -Great urban location in Milwaukee -Interesting fact about UWM – Both Frank Caliendo and Willem Dafoe attended UWM -Studying? Yes, there was a lot of work… Graduate Experiences: -Systems Engineering Master’s Program -Attended Iowa State University from 2009 to 2012 -Never actually went to Ames, IA -Studying? Yes, there was even more work on occasion, but more practical application based. 5

Different roles that I’ve had as an Engineer… Project Engineer Manufacturing Engineer Quality Engineer Service Engineer Reliability Engineer Systems Engineer Maintenance and Overhaul Engineer Engineering Manager 6

Where do I work? I currently work for Not the car company….sorry for the disappointment I currently work out of our Rolls-Royce Engine Services Office in Oakland, CA We service engines that are used in several military applications 7

What’s the most exciting project I ever worked on? Trent 900 Program in Derby, UK in 2011 Installed on the A-380 Airbus Suffered a near miss incident which was engine related 9

How did college prepare me? The basic engineering & physics principals which I applied in college still apply today. Skills learned during graduate school applied heavily in my current roles. College teaches you to be self motivated Very important! Its ok to not have all the answers…. It may be a useless platitude, but “I never stopped learning” Recommendations for anyone who’s interested in the field of engineering: -Don’t get discouraged early on in college -If you don’t love it, trust me, you’ll know right away -Network with others -Work smarter, not harder… 10
