2 Journals Each day you will have a journal topic. You will have 10-15 minutes to respond to the topic. Your journals entries must be kept in your English notebook. Journals are collected at the end of each term. If you are not working on your journal during the allotted time you will face the consequences. Journals must be 5 complete sentences. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to makeup the journal.

3 Labeling Each journal should be clearly labeled like the example below: Journal #1 Your Name Date

4 Journal # 1 August 25 th is “National Banana Split Day.” Explain how to make a banana split. August 23 rd & 24 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

5 Journal # 2 On August 26 th in 1920, the 19th Amendment - Women’s Equality was signed. Why do you think it was important for women to be able to vote? August 25 th & 26 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

6 Journal # 3 August 30 th is “National Toasted Marshmallow Day.” Write a poem about this tasty treat. August 30 TH & 31 ST Journals must be FIVE sentences!

7 Journal # 4 It is extremely hot today. What steps do you think the school should take to help keep classrooms cooled off? Write a letter to the principal explaining your thoughts about the heat and what you think should be done. September 1 st & 2 nd Journals must be FIVE sentences!

8 Journal # 5 On September 6, 2000, a popular MP3 web site was fined for copyright violation. Instead of purchasing an MP3, visitors could simply download an MP3 free of charge. Music downloading is a popular activity with both kids and adults. Do you think you should be able to make a music purchase and share it with everyone you want? Or should each person have to buy the music themselves? What is your opinion? September 6 th & 7 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

9 Journal # 6 On September 8, 1940, poet Jack Prelutsky was born. He is well known for his fun and silly poems. Select a school-related topic and write your own poem. September 8 th & 9 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

10 Journal # 7 September 11th is a Day of Remembrance. As we honor those who lost their lives on this day 2001, make a list of everything in your life that you are thankful for. September 12 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

11 Journal # 8 On September 13, 1916, author Roald Dahl was born. One of his more popular books, James and the Giant Peach, was made into a movie. There is always a debate about which to do first – read the book or see the movie. Which do you think is the right choice? Has there been a time when your choice was wrong? Explain. September 13 th & 14 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

12 Journal # 9 On September 6, 1620, the Pilgrims set sail from Plymouth, England. If you had been a Pilgrim on the Mayflower, explain what some of your joys and fears may have been. September 15 th & 16 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!

13 Journal # 10 On this date in 1819, poet John Keats wrote a poem entitled "To Autumn.” In just a few days, autumn will begin. Write a poem that describes the change in seasons. September 19 th Journals must be FIVE sentences!
