ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Which state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, or plasma) do you believe is most important for survival? Explain your thinking.
2
The States of Matter What is matter? What are the states of matter?
How can you tell the different states of matter apart? Can the matter change into different states?
3
Does Matter Really Matter?
BY LINDSAY PURNELL
4
Topics of Discussion: What is matter?
The three states of matter: Solids, liquids, and gases Changing matter from one state to another Matter in the real world
5
What is matter? Matter is EVERYTHING around you!
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is anything made of atoms and molecules.
6
The Three States of Matter
SOLID GAS LIQUID
7
SOLIDS Retain their shape
Particles are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern Particles will vibrate but cannot move past each other
8
LIQUIDS Assume the shape of their containers
Particles are close together but do not form a pattern Particles flow and can easily move past each other
9
GASES Assume the shape of their containers
Particles are well- separated with no regular pattern Particles vibrate and move freely at high speeds
10
Classifying the States of Matter: What have you learned?
Get ready to test your knowledge on the different states of matter! Is it a solid, a liquid, or a gas? It’s up to you to figure it out! ses.html
11
Changes In Matter Temperature and pressure can make matter change states. How does this happen???
12
Raising The Temperature
When heat is applied to matter, its state usually changes from solid liquid gas. There are some exceptions in which the solid will go straight to a gas.
13
Lowering The Temperature
When matter is cooled, its state usually changes from gas liquid solid. There are some exceptions in which the gas will go straight to a solid.
14
NAMES OF CHANGES Heating Cooling Solid Liquid = MELTING
Liquid Gas = BOILING Solid Gas = SUBLIMATION Liquid Solid = FREEZING Gas Liquid = CONDENSATION Gas Solid = DEPOSITION
15
How it “matters” in the real world…
Watch how these artists from Columbus, Ohio use the states of matter in their every day lives… STATES OF MATTER VIDEO
16
Lesson Summary: What is matter? What are the three states of matter?
How are these states different? How does matter change from one state to another? Give examples. How is matter important to us?
