What is Parents as Teachers? n An evidence-based home visiting program n A voluntary primary prevention program prenatal to age five n A universal access program that can be targeted n A strengths-based family education and parent support program

PAT Core Beliefs n All parents deserve support as childs first teacher n Childs early years are critical for optimal development n Respect for traditions and cultures is essential n Services should be adapted to meet the needs of the family and community n Established and emerging research should be the foundation of parent education/family support.

PAT Goals n Increase parental knowledge of child development and improve parenting practices n Provide a means for early detection of potential learning problems. n Prevent and reduce child abuse and neglect n Increase childrens school readiness and school success

Outreach n PAT adapted and targeted for at-risk families n Eligible family must be low income and have a pregnancy and/or or child under age 1 at the point the family is enrolled. n Outreach and recruitment plan reflects targeted population

Personal Visit Component n Delivered in the home n Weekly or twice a month based on need n Weekly caseload = 12-14 families n Twice a month = 24 -25 families n Born to Learn Curriculum is used

Parent Group Meetings Component n Frequency = Once a month minimum n Include child development information n 4 types: –parent-child interaction, –small ongoing groups, –presentation-plus, –community events

Annual Screening Component n Development, health, hearing and vision n PATNC approved screening tools (ASQ, Denver, etc) n Parents engaged in the process n Parents receive verbal and written summary n Sensitivity to familys culture and primary language n Can be contracted out

Resource Network Component n Help families overcome barriers to needed resources n IFSP n Coordinate services with other providers n Assist in transition out of program to next placement n Participate in community efforts to improve services for families

Staff Qualifications n 4 year degree and s upervised experience working with young children and their parents. is preferred n However, individual programs may include additional or alternative educational or work history requirements that they find appropriate and acceptable to meet the needs of their community.

Born to Learn Curriculum –Based on child development and neuroscience research –Prenatal-36 months visit plans (for monthly, bi- weekly and weekly visits) –Child development and human diversity resources for parent educators –Parent handouts – 2 reading levels –16 segment video series –Available in English and Spanish

Core Training Costs n PAT P-3 Institute = $520 n Born to Learn Curriculum = $295 (each home visitor must have one) n Follow –Up Day – included

Getting started n Begin working with a PATNC Planning Consultant n Submit an initial PAT Program Plan n Register for training n Complete the Born to Learn TM Institute n Receive certification and affiliation notices n Annual renewal of certification – in-service requirement
