CMS Perspectives of 13 th December event D. Barney et al
2
Things that could be improved Before 13 th December – Plan for the seminar not understood by all involved – Logistics for announcements to press etc. not clear until the last minute – Some physicists found it unfair that some journalists had the “story” (under embargo) before they did During the seminar and press conference – Webcast was overwhelmed (understood and action taken for future events) – Slides were not available to physicists until >1 hour after the seminar – No “press kit” available for journalists – even though both ATLAS and CMS had prepared materials etc. Could prepare a short list of links to relevant images, videos, plots, event displays etc. – even if the links would only be active after the seminar – Advance upload of material on CDS not straightforward Changing from “restricted” to “public” does not work – Lists of CMS physicists to be interviewed did not appear to be used very much Media organizations not matched to speakers of respective languages Lucas, Marzena, Dave helped set-up interviews Lists of people could be distributed to journalists, be printed large and put on the wall with photos of the interviewees etc. etc.

Journalists comments to us Wanted to know how to get the plots from the presentations – Indeed it was not clear (to anybody!) when/where the presentations would be available Many journalists expected “more” – even though they were warned that no “discovery announcement” was going to happen – Possible consequence of inviting journalists to the seminar Seminar was (understandably!) very technical for most journalists – They needed a clear and simple message – this is something that the SPs/DG/comms teams should work on for future press conferences – i.e. pre-empt the simplest questions and provide a sheet of faq
4
CMS Materials – statement etc. ~23k views of the statement. Some comments that it is unclear who the statement is intended for
5
Miscellaneous CMS twitter feed updated throughout the seminar – ~13000 followers – Some CMS tweets re-tweeted by CERN – many thanks Arnaud! Static event displays from CMS – Picked-up by many media around the world Animated event displays – Several thousand views and one French news organization used one in their news
