Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces Every plot must contain some kind of conflict Stories can have more than one conflict Conflicts can be external or internal

External conflict- outside force may be person, group, animal, nature, or a nonhuman obstacle External conflict- outside force may be person, group, animal, nature, or a nonhuman obstacle Internal conflict- takes place in a character’s mind Internal conflict- takes place in a character’s mind

Man vs. Man: one person against another person Man vs. Machine: a person against a robot, engine, computer etc. Man vs. Nature: a person against the natural elements Man vs. Society: a person against everyone or the law

Jim and Mac disagreed about where they should take the dog they found. Jim wanted to keep the dog and Mac thought the dog should go to a local shelter.

Act it out skits: In groups you will be given secret scenarios with conflicts. Act out the conflicts in front of the class. Students must show the correct type of conflict and the class will guess the type after the skit.
