1347-1351 24 million people died between 1347-48 By 1399 another 20 million people died

 I can identify what the plague was and it’s impact on the decline of feudalism.  I can identify how the black plague gave rise to democratic thinking.

 Children often have different coping mechanisms to deal with pain and suffering.  One of the things they do is play games or write songs about what they are experiencing  Ring Around the Rosy is an example  Ring around the rosy= the rings that develop on the skin that show up before the black buboes  Pocket full of posy= people would fill their pockets with flowers to help ward off the plague and the bad stench of the bodies  Ashes, Ashes= all of the ashes in the air from the burned bodies and belongings of those who died from the plague  We all fall down= the towns falling apart and the high death rate from the plague

 Bubonic Plague- transmitted from a rat to a person by the bite of a flea. The incubation period was about two days and death in 5-7 days. The most easily survived of the types of plague.  Headache, weakness, chills, white coating on the tongue, staggering gait, blackish buboes, lymph nodes swell, heart begins to flutter, nervous system begins to collapse, anxiety, skin blackens, death  Pneumonic- transmitted from person to person through the air and entered the lungs. The incubation period was 2-3 days and 95- 100% fatal within about 3-5 days. A cough developed and spread it  Septocemic- bacteria entered the bloodstream from a flea bite, rash formed. Death usually occurred within one day, or hours, 100% fatal.  The plague was easily spread because of unsanitary conditions and the high populations of towns and cities during the middle ages.

 Earthquakes giving off poisonous fumes  Severe changes in temperature  Strong winds that “blew” the plague to the people  Bad or odorous air  Conjunction of the planets Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars at 1pm on March 20, 1345  Christians believed it was God’s wrath and punishment for sin.

 Prayer  Move to the mountains (this actually was effective because it got them away from the towns)  Avoiding baths- hot water opens the pores of the skin, letting more bad air in  Diet- eat figs in the morning, chopped snake, rhubarb, onions, leeks, garlic, hard boiled eggs, lettuce, and NO dessert  Sleep- sleep first on the right side, then sleep on the left  Exercise- avoid it because it also opens the pores of the skin  Odor- covered themselves with either foul smelling or sweet smelling things  People panicked and either drove out or killed groups that were different, gypsies, Jews, grave diggers, strangers from other countries, drunks, and beggars

 24 million people died between 1347-1348  By 1399 and multiple outbreaks another 20 million died  Because of these deaths there weren’t enough workers, wages went up and conditions were improved  Serfs abandoned feudal manors and moved to towns and cities in search of better opportunities  Power shifted from the nobles to the common people  People had more money, they spent more money, the economy grew  Total breakdown of the feudal societies and hierarchies  Distrust of the Church, prayer didn’t change or fix the problem, people began to questions previously held beliefs
