Objective Students will be able to describe 4 features of sedimentary rocks.

Word of the Day Feature: A distinctive quality or characteristic. Settle: To cause to sink.

Sedimentary Features Bedding: Horizontal layering. Results from sediments settling out of water or wind. 2 Kinds Graded Bedding: Bedding in which small particles are on top and large particles are on bottom (a progression.) Cross Bedding: Bedding in which layers of sediment are slanted.

Sedimentary Features Cross- Bedding in Sedimentary Rocks.

Sedimentary Features Ripple Marks: When sediment is moved into small ridges by wind or water. Symmetrical Ripples: Produced by Oceans. Asymmetrical Ripples: Produced by Rivers.

Sedimentary Features Sorting and Rounding: Sediments are initially jagged in shape, but become round as they are transported. Hard minerals (quartz) have a better chance of becoming rounded. Evidence of Past Life: Sedimentary rocks may contain Fossils.
