Why immigrate? 1. Plentiful and cheap land in the West (until the frontier was closed) 2. Jobs and opportunities 3. Religious freedom 4. Political freedom 5. Irish-potato famine

Push factors Push Factors: Conditions that drive people to leave their homes Examples: 1. Land scarce in home country 2. Political and/or religious persecution 3. Revolutions 4. Poverty 5. Lack of Jobs 6. Natural disasters 7. Racial prejudice

Pull factors Pull factors: Conditions that attract people to a new area Examples: 1. Promise of freedom (religious and political) 2. Hope for a new life 3. Industry 4. Jobs 5. Land 6. “Streets paved with gold”

Adjusting to america Many lived in ghettos (community of one culture of ethnic group) ◦Spoke native language ◦Celebrated holidays with foods from the “old country” Being with their “own people” made life in America easier Needed jobs ◦Many lived off the land ◦Took low paying jobs Seen as a threat—willing to work less Workers afraid immigrants would take all of the jobs Had to learn English ◦Children in school (learned the easiest) ◦Workers Children wanted to be seen as Americans ◦Helped family learn English ◦Played American games ◦Wore American clothing

Immigrant Groups You will be given a folder with a specific immigrant group. You will read about that immigrant group and then write a diary entry pretending to be that group of immigrants. You may write 1 diary entry per group and it should be 2 paragraphs long. -Why did you leave your home country? -What problems do you face in America? -What job do you have in America?
