Only the Federal government can give & TAKE AWAY citizenship – But…State governments can deny criminals of rights (Example: voting) 1.Denaturalization: loss of citizenship through fraud/ deception during naturalization process Example: former Nazi’s during WWII 2.Expatriation: give up citizenship to live in foreign country Can be voluntary and involuntary Example of involuntary: child whose parents become citizens of another country (child automatically becomes citizen of that country) 3.Punishment for crime: loss of citizenship because serious crime committed Example: treason; national security

U.S. restricts amount of immigrants who can enter country (quota) Priorities for: – Relatives of U.S. citizens – Needed job skills – Money to invest in country Illegal immigrants: in country illegally (1) refused citizenship (2) fear long process to become citizen Get here by (1) illegal cross border (2) came on visa and never left Characteristics: 1.No friends/ family 2.No place to live 3.No sure way to earn money (against law to hire/ low pay; no benefits) 4.Constant fear of being deported (sent back to home country)

Legal Aliens 1.Resident alien: person from foreign country who has established permanent residence in U.S. Can stay in U.S. as long as wish without becoming U.S. citizen CANNOT: vote; run for office; serve on juries; work in gov’t job 2.Non-resident alien: person from foreign country who does NOT expect to stay in U.S. long 3.Refugee: people fleeing country to escape persecution (oppression/ abuse) All legal aliens must carry ID at all times
