2 School of Dentistry Challenges  Air condition system  X-ray equipment  Dental chairs and equipment  Recognition of UWI / DDS graduates by Caricom Governments

3 School of Dentistry Air Conditioning Response Installation of nine (9) large split level AC units in the Polyclinic and the patient waiting area, and the Child Dental Health Unit. Installation of 17 portable room AC units in various clinics, which include six (6) in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department in the domain of NCRHA and in some seminar rooms.

4 School of Dentistry X-ray equipment Response Three (3) digital intra oral x-ray units with computers and networking were installed in the clinics and an Autoclave Statum 5000 sterilizer

5 School of Dentistry Notable Achievements  82% overall pass rate in the May 2009 examinations; 50% of these secured honors and distinctions.  External Examiners have written letters complimenting the quality of UWI Dental graduates.  The ADA has afforded accreditation status to the School as a site for the Residency Program run in collaboration with the Lutheran Medical Center.  Centre for MFDS (Edinburgh) examinations – graduates’ pass rate equivalent to other international schools  3 recent graduates of the School gained admission to postgraduate programmes in the UK.

7 School of Dentistry  Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine and other Health Professionals (CAAM-HP) ◦ Self –Study in Progress ◦ Visit expected in 2010

9 School of Veterinary Med. Challenges  Attracting extra-regional students into the DVM programme.  Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) still managed by the NCRHA, which hampers clinical training of students.  Difficulty in attracting academic staff into the clinical areas due to inedaquate remuneration packages.

10 School of Veterinary Med.  Attracting extra-regional students into the DVM programme Response Accreditation by CAAM-HP for the veterinary programme (4 years) [2009-13] Visit to Academic Trade Fairs in USA Marketing in Veterinary Journals

11 School of Veterinary Med. Response  All 27 final year students successfully completed final examinations.  All 5 Jamaican graduates from the SVM who took the 2009 Jamaican National Examination for the Registration of Veterinarians (NERV) were successful including top performance.  Very complimentary letter from Veterinary Council to the School

12 School of Veterinary Med. Response cont’d SVM submitted a proposal which was favourably considered for implementation, for the school to serve as the Centre for Regional Registration Examinations (CRRE) for veterinarians.

13 School of Veterinary Med. Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) still managed by the NCRHA Response Combined Management Committee for the VTH has been agreed to by NCRHA Appointment of Hospital Manager / Lecturer by FMS

14 School of Veterinary Med. Difficulty in attracting academic staff into the clinical areas due to inadequate remuneration packages. Visiting Professors – short term appointments Workshops  Hosted 2-day workshops by videoconferencing to regional vets at 4 centres (Jamaica, Barbados, T&T) and Bahamas)  Orthopaedic Surgery  Veterinary Cardiology

16 GAPS SPACE ‘Inadequate and cramped accommodation for the Pharmacy Programme, Veterinary School and the School of Dentistry’ Cabinet appointed committee (April 2008)

17 Response Agreement by MSTTE that a proposal should be submitted addressing Expansion of the FMS Consultancy being engaged

18 GAPS SPACE- Inadequate, unhygienic and cramped accommodation for students at the clinical sites – CAAM 10 new rooms provided at POSGH for students’ on-call Tenders invited for refurbishing of floor above POSGH Library to accommodate rooms as well as students’ lounge and tutorial room 3-storey building at SFGH allocated to UWI to accommodate 40 beds for on-call, laundry & kitchen, faculty office and tutorial rooms

19 GAPS -STAFFING- Overall STA employs approximately 50% fewer faculty than Mona, but with the same or higher student numbers Heavy dependence on Associate Faculty Response: Bursar has allowed funds for special initiatives: TT 5M (2009-10) TT 10M (2010-11) New terms and conditions for Associate Faculty approved by Bursar – starting 09-10

21 FINANCING THE ENTERPRISE SELF – FINANCING FACULTY GOTT SUBVENTION DEFICIT Response Agreement to clear the deficit (GOTT)- promised but not yet realised Increase in tuition fees – move towards alignment
