Step 1 The first step is to grow cacao trees which grow best in a tropical forest like in Ghana or Brazil. The beans are picked by hand, then dried for a week and transported by rail to a factory. What energy is being used to transport the beans?
3
Step 2 Cocoa beans are roasted in large, revolving roasters at very high temperatures. Energy is used to heat the chocolate and comes from_________ (fossil fuels; hydropower; wind energy; solar energy; other).
4
Step 3 The ingredients used in a Hershey’s milk chocolate bar are:
chocolate liquor cocoa butter sugar Milk There is energy used to make all of these ingredients. The milk is obtained by using electric milking machines and then it is transported usually by truck using fossil fuels.
5
Step 4: The Blending of Ingredients
The whole milk-sugar mixture is slowly dried until it turns into a thick, taffy-like material. Chocolate crumb (a brown powder) is made by combining chocolate liquor with the milk and sugar. More energy is used in these processes.
6
Step 5 The crumb is made into a thick chocolate paste, then poured into huge vats. Then it is cooled until it gets to exactly the right amount of “hardness” or the right consistency. Then it is formed into either bars or “kisses.” The candy is wrapped and transported in cooled trucks to your store.
