Background Information DoL figures for 2006 reported 7 out of the 14 construction related fatalities attributed to falls from height Recent analysis of ACC data showed falls as the most commonly cited cause (and second only to lifting in terms of more expensive claims) In 2007, ACC spent over $14m in ladder related claims (includes home/diy falls)

General ACC Claims Data for Construction Over 2,100 serious injury claims recorded in 2008 Average cost = approx $11,000 per claim Overall cost > $24 million Residential construction, trade groups and civil construction make up the highest number of claims

Descriptive information recorded on ACC construction claims (COHFE Report 2008) The 7 most commonly stated agents (causes) given in the accident description, in order of the highest number of claims: 1.Ladder related 2.Vehicle related 3.Wood/timber 4.Roof related 5.Cutter/saw 6.Scaffold related 7.Nail related

How high were they working? Over 50% of actual height recorded in accident description related to heights of under 3 metres; Top four trades reporting height related incidents (in order): –Painting & decorating services –Electrical services –Roofing services –Carpentry services
