A. Distance Causes Problems 1. Americans, or Anglos, around Texas were causes of concern for the Spanish Government because they were interested in the large available tracts of land in Tejas..

A. Distance Causes Problems 2. Spaniards, who were far removed from Spain, didn’t like how their King seemed too far away to solve their problems. ~Began calling themselves Mexicans

A. Distance Causes Problems 3. Spaniards living in Tejas began to identify with American rules and government because it was closer. ~They witnessed firsthand how democracy works and began to think a King wasn’t the best option

A. Distance Causes Problems 4. Filibusters, or Americans who entered Tejas illegally, crossed the border to steal horses (natural resources). ~King was too far away to stop them!

B. Battle of Medina 1. The Leader of the Mexican Republican Army, Jose Gutierrez de Lara, set out to fight against the distant Spanish rule.

B. Battle of Medina 2. Gutierrez and his men joined with Augustus Magee, calling themselves the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition and went looking for opposition.

B. Battle of Medina 3. They met up with the Spanish Royal Army on August 18, 1813 and had the first physical conflict. ~the Battle of Medina was fought

B. Battle of Medina 4. Although Gutierrez and the Republican Army lost miserably, this battle encouraged others to fight for Mexican Independence from Spain.

B. Battle of Medina 5. Eventually, in 1821 Mexico would be granted its independence from Spain. ~Too expensive and far away for Spain to fight for the land

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 1. The new country called itself the United Mexican States.

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 2. It created its own constitution, or set of laws called the Mexican Federal Constitution of 1824, drafted by Erasmo Seguin ~Mexico copied its neighbor to the North!

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 3. This constitution created the joint State of Coahuilia y Tejas. ~Tejas was not its own state because the population was too small

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 4. Mexico declared Catholicism as its official religion.

D. A Growing Texas 1. Because of Tejas’ small population, Mexico created the State Colonization Law of 1825. This law allowed for:

D. A Growing Texas ~The ability to setup guidelines for Anglos to colonize Texas in large numbers ~Allowed for Empresarios, or people acting as guides, to bring colonists to Tejas

D. A Growing Texas 2. Moses Austin became the first Anglo Empresario in Tejas to be given Mexican Land Grants. ~Permission to bring in American Anglos to Mexican territory legally

D. A Growing Texas 3. He traveled to Mexico City and was granted permission to settle 300 Americans in Texas. ~He fell ill before he was able to complete his dream of settling Texas

D. A Growing Texas 4. His son, Stephen F. Austin, who was a prominent lawyer, left his job to continue his father’s dream.

D. A Growing Texas 5. Stephen F. Austin will be nicknamed “The Father of Texas” because he brought in the Original 300 Anglo Colonists to Texas.
