Background : Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930 Grew up wanting to be an artist Was drafted and stationed in Japan Returned to study at the University of South Carolina, Columbia between 1949-51 From 1952-58 worked in NY bookshop and as a commercial artist

In New York, met and was influenced by John Cage (composer), Merce Cunningham (choreographer), and Robert Rauschenberg. Visited Philadelphia to see work by Duchamp Inspired by a dream to paint the flag

He was the artistic advisor for the composer John Cage and Merce Cunningham’s Dance Company until 1972 To date Johns has produced over 400 prints in lithography, silkscreen, and intaglio.
