Using prepared spreadsheets to explore number patterns and puzzles at Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 National Strategy Framework for teaching Mathematics: Years 7, 8 and 9 Numeracy and mathematics (page 9) “By Year 9 pupils should: Use calculators and other ICT resources appropriately and effectively to solve mathematical problems…” Making connections (page 46) “…pupils need to be shown them (the links) and reminded about work in earlier lessons.” “Use opportunities for generalisation, proof and problem solving to help pupils to appreciate mathematics as a unified subject..”

“ Among the few examples where ICT suites were used for mathematics lessons, there were good examples of successful whole class teaching for example involving prepared spreadsheets…” OFSTED (2000) p17 para 81 The National Numeracy Strategy: the first year.

Pupils can use prepared spreadsheets to: Explore numbers and the number system. Investigate relationships and number patterns. Model real-life problems and predict the effects of changing variables. Aid mathematical investigations. Use real data and interpret results.

However when using prepared spreadsheets teachers need to consider: Does use of the spreadsheet enhance and support the Desired Learning Objectives? Could the activity be done more effectively or efficiently using other methods e.g mental methods, pen and paper methods? How does the speed and automatic functions of the spreadsheet aid mathematical thinking? Does the activity match the age-range and ability range of the pupils? How the teacher will assess the pupils’ learning e.g. printouts, supporting worksheets. How the use of the spreadsheet will be managed e.g. whole class, groups with teacher support, groups independently, individuals/pairs.

For each example think about: For which part(s) of the mathematics lesson the spreadsheet could be used. How use of the spreadsheet enhances the pupils’ mathematical thinking. Whether it is most suitable for whole class, groups, individuals/pairs or all groupings. The age range for which it might be used. Which KS3 National Strategy objectives the activity addresses.
