MUSIC, BUSINESS STUDIES AND ICT Unit Overview Organising a Charity Concert
2
Unit Objectives By the end of this unit, you should be able to… Use a spreadsheet to organise data into a useful and clear layout Use a spreadsheet to calculate financial information such as income, expenditure and profit Use a spreadsheet to calculate time Use different formulae within a spreadsheet system Make colours change automatically in a spreadsheet Link spreadsheets together Understand how spreadsheet models can be used in different ways depending on the task
3
Your Task 25 years ago, the first global charity concert took place in London and Philadelphia. It was called Live Aid and it raised millions of pounds to help support countries in Africa. There have been many similar concerts since, and charity events are now quite common. Your task is to use ICT (and spreadsheets in particular) to help you to plan for a charity concert of your own. You will use ICT to help you to budget for the event, to manage the running order of the songs and artists involved, and also to track the sale of tickets to the event.
4
How your ICT work will be marked… Level 4 You are able to use a computer system to make calculations. The results of the calculations help you to understand your financial situation. You are able to use the example spreadsheets and adapt them. Level 5 You create a system using the computer, which makes calculations and can automatically display your financial situation. You create basic spreadsheets which work well but do not contain advanced features. Level 6 You create a system and can test it with different values to demonstrate more than one financial situation. You can use your system to make predictions about future financial situations and you are able to write a user guide to your system. You are also able to use the software effectively in a variety of ways. Level 7 You create a fully integrated system and can use it effectively. Your system includes a number of advanced formulae used appropriately and you are able to explain to others how and why you have used the different software functions for specific purposes.

Lesson 1 – Spreadsheet Basics In this first lesson we are going to look at spreadsheet software and see how it can be used to make calculations. Today you should:- Understand how spreadsheets can be used to store data and make calculations Learn how to search the internet effectively by using advanced search techniques
6
Lesson 2 – Balance Sheets Today we are going to look at how spreadsheets can be used to keep a track of money Today you should:- Understand what is meant by income and expenditure Begin to develop an understanding of financial management and using budgets Investigate how spreadsheets can be used to help keep track of finances
7
Lesson 3 – The Concert Today we will see how a spreadsheet table can be used to select the running order for your concert and calculate the timings of the show. Today you should:- Understand how spreadsheets can be used to compare different situations Learn about how lists and pull down menus can be used to create different running orders Learn about the vlookup and int formulas
8
Lesson 4 – The Box Office Today we will see how a spreadsheet can be used to create a box office system for the recording of ticket sales. Today you should:- Learn about the count formula and how it can be used Learn about ‘absolute cell referencing’ in formulas Learn about ‘conditional formatting’ to change the colour of cells automatically
9
Lesson 5 – Connecting Sheets In this lesson we will see how we can link together your three sheets into one ‘system’. Today you should:- Be able to see the link between different uses of spreadsheets Connect together the different elements of their system
10
Lesson 6 – Evaluation In this final lesson, we will be looking back at what we have achieved and learned. Today you should:- Evaluate the systems and consider what has been learned Develop skills in self-evaluation Consider what user documentation could be developed for the end user
