GOALS OF PROJECT Decrease cost of textbooks for students -Students pay over $1,000 annually for textbooks -Cost of textbooks would be capped at $30.00 Develop educational materials and resources for faculty Collection of resources would include: -Textbooks -Syllabi -Readings -Course Activities/Assignments

PHASE I Phase I – 42 courses were developed in the first year of the project Materials became available October 31, 2011 At this time there have been over 20,000 visits to opencourselibrary.org 81 media article world wide In first year students have saved 1.1 million in textbook costs – the save is more than what was spent to develop the first 42 courses

LESSONS LEARNED IN PHASE I Many faculty involved in the first phase were not familiar with ANGEL. There was no way to compare work between course teams. To offset concerns of quality: -Each course has been pilot tested in a college classroom -2 peer reviews of open library course -Instructional Designer review using Quality Matters rubric -Curriculum/instructional expert review Too many websites to monitor and keep track of – some websites become inactive or become unavailable.
6
PHASE II Phase II - RFPs were sent out in Fall 2011 for faculty to develop final 39 courses Faculty designers were again chosen through competitive process These 39 courses will be available in Spring 2013 This year faculty designers are using Google Docs (Program similar to WORD and more familiar to faculty than ANGEL). Big push now to get materials adopted Working with system librarians to track and promote open library content
