Madeline “Gracie” Burns Around Halloween in 2013, Gracie started having stomach issues where she wasn’t really eating and was dealing with a lot of nausea. Figuring she had a stomach bug, she was in and out of the doctor’s and urgent care for most of November. On November 23 rd she went to Phoenix Children’s Hospital ER for a check and to hopefully get some IV fluids. The ER doctors decided to admit Grace for some testing and observation. Thus began her journey…

November 17 th – Having fun at home! November 28 th – Thanksgiving in the hospital. Madeline “Gracie” Burns

December 1 st – Suffered a stroke on November 29 th. Fortunate to be in the hospital surrounded by great doctors when it happened! December 9 th – Stabilized and starting to recover. The stroke left her with heavy left side paralysis. Very visible in the face with almost no use of her left arm and leg

December 20 th – One of her first chances to get out of bed! Still on an EEG machine though so she couldn’t wander too far! January 1 st – Relaxing after the New Year Party! Still on IV and a feeding tube. The gastric issues are still troubling her though.

January 5 th – Playing Princess on the playground stage at the hospital. Mickey was the leading man of course! Still fighting the stomach issues, but always smiling!

January 14 th – Sporting the maroon and gold! January 12 th – Laying in the grass at the hospital with her brother. Beautiful smile

February 4 th – Two princesses – Grace visits with Miss Arizona January 30 th – Sitting up and working on trunk strength and using the left arm

February 10 th – Celebrating her 12 th birthday with a party! Lots of family and friends and even Dora!

February 15 th – Relaxing with her great smile February 17 th – Working hard in therapy. Still needs almost full support and bracing to walk, but is making real progress

A Miracle Day! Gracie was released from the hospital on Friday March 7 th. She was so excited to FINALLY be able to go for a ride in the Jeep! February 26 th – Enjoying a birthday party for one of the other little girls in the hospital

March 9 th – On the playground! She needed full assistance to walk or move, but she would hold on and stand unassisted. Little Miss Independent! March 8 th – Making pancakes at home

Wednesday March 19 th – Grace had a relapse and was readmitted to PCH. Stomach and eating issues were the first signs of trouble Friday March 21 st – Grace’s condition deteriorated quickly

March 22 nd, 11:45pm Grace’s condition quickly worsened throughout the week after she was readmitted. Breathing and heart functions slowly decreased. Madeline Grace Burns was finally free from all of the pain and struggle at nearly midnight. Her laugh and her smile will never be forgotten. Video – Click Play
