9
Geography The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere including climate. What is the environment of a place like? How can we describe it?
10
Geographic Features 1) Landforms 2) Climate 3) Bodies of Water 4) Vegetation 5) Natural Resources 6) Elevation
11
Landform A natural formation of rock and dirt on the earth’s surface Examples: Mountains, hills, valleys, plains, islands, archipelagos, volcanoes, canyons
12
Climate The long-term patterns of weather in an area, including temperature and rainfall TEMPERATURE + RAINFALL = CLIMATE
13
Arid Climate Very hot and dry In a desert, you would experience an arid climate.
14
Tropical Climate Very hot and very rainy
15
Temperate Climate (Hot summers/cold winters, average amount of rainfall) - Seasonal In New Jersey, we have a temperate climate.
16
Tundra Climate Very cold and dry
17
Bodies of Water Physical features that permanently contain fresh or salt water Examples: oceans, rivers, lakes, streams
18
Vegetation The plants that commonly cover the ground in a region Examples: Forest - trees, grassland, desert - cacti, rainforests – trees and vines
19
Natural Resources Materials naturally found in the earth that can be used by human beings
20
Elevation The measure of distance above or below sea level
21
Lemons (landforms) Can (climate) Be (bodies of water) Very (vegetation) Nice… (natural resources) Eventually (elevation)
22
Check for Understanding LAKE: Body of water, or landform?
23
Check for Understanding Grassland: Elevation or vegetation?
24
Check for Understanding Wood: Vegetation or natural resource?
25
