Unit 1 Week 1 introducing Sentence Types

SENTENCE TYPES

DAY 1 sentence – a group of words that expresses a complete thought. I read mystery books. Sentences begin with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. Can you find my book? fragment – a group of words that is punctuated like a sentence but does not express a complete thought. Your book is.

QUESTION: How does a fragment differ from a sentence?

SENTENCE TYPES

DAY 2 declarative sentence – a statement Ex. Nick is a skateboarder. imperative sentence – gives a command Ex. Always wear a helmet when skateboarding. interrogative sentence – asks a question Ex. Can you skateboard? exclamatory sentence – expresses excitement Ex. I’m amazed by Nick’s skating skills! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqdBZZToCpw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wrv_ZviMEc

Mechanics and Usage: Avoiding Verb Tense Shifts

DAY 3 Avoid shifting from one verb tense to another in the same sentence when the action occurs at the same time. Ex. Whenever I cooked, my sister asks for more. The acts of cooking and asking occur at the same time, so the tenses must match. Ex. Whenever I cook, my sister asks for more. When actions occur at different times, however, a shift makes sense. Ex. I usually walk to school, but yesterday I rode my bike.
