2 Africa Command protects and defends the national security interests of the United States by strengthening the defense capabilities of African States and regional organizations and, when directed, conducts military operations, in order to deter and defeat transnational threats and to provide a security environment conducive to good governance and development. U.S. Africa Command Mission

3 Securing the Maritime Domain Encourage National and Regional maritime strategies tied to economic development Support Regional cooperation for information sharing, operations, and law enforcement Coordination is required across entire maritime security sector – defense, justice, transport, fisheries, environment, etc. Synchronize multinational capacity building efforts Implement best practices and lessons learned from global experience

4 Current Efforts Regional & bilateral assistance with maritime strategies and strategic & operational planning Africa Partnership Station (APS) – Synchronizes multinational efforts for training – Encourages regional participation EXPRESS-series exercises focus on most prevalent regional threats Africa Maritime Law Enforcement Partnership (AMLEP) conducts real-world operations and results in seizures, arrests, & fines ECCAS / ECOWAS collaboration – Sign MOU – Member states adopt operational law enforcement agreement

5 Goals Support African Leadership to develop maritime security capacity (Strategies to Execution) Regional cooperation to counter range of illicit activity at sea from Port to EEZ Synchronized international support for capacity building (training, equipment, technology) Multi-lateral legal agreements set framework for regional maritime law enforcement
