2 Citrus County Schools, Florida2 In schools that improve literacy… Research based intervention is consistently implemented, monitored, and evaluated. All teachers K-12 consistently teach, model, and practice literacy strategies before, during, and after reading.

3 Citrus County Schools, Florida3 What Is Literacy? Citrus County Schools defines literacy as 7 processes: listening, viewing, thinking, speaking, reading, writing and expressing through multiple symbol systems.

4 Citrus County Schools, Florida4 Daily Non-Negotiables K-12 Have a print rich literacy environment Use the seven processes of literacy Read to and with students Teach, model and practice strategies of expert readers and writers. Require accountable independent reading. Instruct phonics and phonemic awareness in K/1, and for others who have not reached mastery.

7 Citrus County Schools, Florida7 Phonemic Awareness The ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words.

8 Citrus County Schools, Florida8 Phonics Phonics instruction teaches children the relationships between the letters of written language and the individual sounds of the spoken language.

9 Citrus County Schools, Florida9 Fluency Fluency is the ability to read with appropriate speed, with accuracy and with prosody. Fluency is the bridge between the other elements and comprehension.

10 Citrus County Schools, Florida10 Vocabulary Vocabulary refers to the words we must know to communicate effectively. This includes oral reading, silent reading, writing, and listening vocabulary.

11 Citrus County Schools, Florida11 Comprehension Comprehension is the ability to understand and gain meaning from a written or spoken text. It is the reason for reading!

12 Citrus County Schools, Florida12 Strategies of Expert Readers Prediction: What is it about? What will happen next? Visualization: Picturing the concept or narrative. Connection: Making connections to self, to other texts, and to the world. Questioning: Asking questions, do I understand?
