2 Martin Luther King Jr.- Nonviolent Philosophy using disobedience. Malcolm X: Leader of the Nation of Islam. Work towards social and economic independence rather than social integration.

3 Black Power Movement- called for greater African American power and Independence.

4 Civil Rights Act of 1964 Voting Rights Act of 1965: Fed Government power to inspect voter registration process and to protect all citizens’ voting rights. More than half of all African Americans in south registered to vote!

5 United Farm Workers Union: Cesar Chavez formed this union in 1962 to improve pay and working conditions for migrant workers. Chicano Movement: Sought to increase Hispanic cultural pride and political power.

6 1968 Elementary and Secondary Education Act addressed the needs of learners who did not speak English. Voting Rights Act of 1975- Required areas with large immigrant populations to provide ballots in different languages.

7 1963- Commission on the Status of Women reported that Women often received lower pay and fewer job opportunities than men. Equal Pay Act- Employers pay men and women the same wages for the same job.

8 Organized by Betty Friedan and others. Organized a national debate on the roles of women. The organization fought for women’s rights in educational and job opportunities.

9 1972- Equal Rights Amendment which was intended to prevent gender discrimination in any form. Educational Amendments Act of 1972- Title IX- no college that receives federal aid can discriminate against women.

10 Fight for the rights and properties guaranteed in earlier treaties. Legislation: Indian Civil Rights Act in 1968- protects the constitutional rights of American Indians and their right to self- government on reservations.

11 Activists formed the Disabled in Action (DIA) Fight for Access to both buildings and better opportunities.

12 The Rehabilitation Act of 1973- outlawed discrimination by federal agencies against people with disabilities. Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1976- Required public schools to provide quality education to children with disabilities.

13 Civil Rights Movement greatly inspired some members of the Students for Democratic Society: Protested against racial discrimination, strict college rules, and the growing U.S. military involvement in Vietnam. LACK OF RESPECT?!

14 Generation Gap: Division between older and younger people, where young people rejected their parents’ values and beliefs. Baby Boomers: Number of people aged 15-24 rose almost 50% Entering College and the work force

15 Counterculture: Culture with values that ran counter to or, against those of the main society. Stressed individual freedom, group sharing, and nonviolence.

16 Hippies: Members of the counterculture Tried different lifestyles like wearing their hair long and dressed in unusual clothing. Many hippies used the process of Tie-Dying their clothes and also took part in drug use.
