Year 10 Work Experience

WE is no longer compulsory, however we feel the benefits of WE are worth us still including it in the KS4 curriculum. Monday 12 th to Friday 16 th October 2015 You will go on a prelim the last week of term in July 2015

Where can you go on work experience? Anywhere within reason!!!!

Constraints We don’t like you to go with parents unless the company is big enough for them not be working with them We don’t like you to go with your friends unless the company is big enough for you both. We don’t really like you to go too far away. We don’t like you to come to Edgecliff that week. There are certain places due to HS they are not allowed to go…sole traders, butchers! brewery

About the placement You need to research a placement using the guidance given. Some of you will have a good idea where you want to go and what you want to do. Others of you will have a more general idea of the area they would like to work i.e. work with animals, retail, construction. Once you have a suitable contact, an enquiry must be made by letter, phone, email or in person. HOWEVER ALL PLACEMENTS MUST BE CONFIRMED IN WRITING

Cont. Once the placement has been confirmed by the company, details must be brought in to the school office to ensure H&S checks have been completed ( we will come back to this in a minute) Company name, name of contact, address, postcode, telephone number. Form Tutors have a piece of paperwork for you to complete once you have these details. You will receive a staff visit during the placement. You will receive a WE report from the employer to put into the Progress file You will complete a diary while on placement

Health and Safety All placements have to be Health and Safety checked by Dudley EBP otherwise you are not covered by our insurance. If the placement is not on the database we have to request a Health and Safety check. These checks can take up to 12 weeks. You must hand in placement details ASAP. If the placement is classed as “ out of area” we may be charged to check. We cannot pay for these checks but we will contact home and ask what they want us to do….it can be up to £60

Areas that charge London Buckinghamshire Berkshire Cambridgeshire Derbyshire Cheshire Gloucestershire Hertfordshire Leicestershire Lincoln Manchester Middlesex Northamptonshire Surrey Birmingham depends on the company sometimes a charge is made depending if they are already Health and Safety checked

We appreciate that some of you may struggle with transport but the more flexible you can be the easier it is to find a placement. Your parents DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE YOU Unfortunately in the current climate some companies will say no. Please try and persevere and don’t give up. If you don’t find a placement you are in school!

If you are struggling to find a placement ask!!!!!

What do you need to do? Start to think about where you may like to go on work experience. Start to contact companies to see if a placement is available. Confirm placement in writing Get a sheet off your tutor and bring the required details in to the Office. Make an appointment to see Miss Masters or Mrs Fowler if you don’t know where to go. Complete the work experience booklet in PSHE over the next few lessons. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

Any questions about W.E in general? Please phone or email h.fowler@edgecliff.co.uk or s.masters@edgecliff.co.uk h.fowler@edgecliff.co.uk We have good placements in certain areas already on the books. Please ask.
