Building services (which cover heating, ventilation, telecommunication, IT, security, water and drainage) are excluded from the elements of interior design because they are usually the result of the design coordination of the elements discussed. If on the other hand, a choosing building services system begins to influence the design of any of the elements, then it should be put into the equation.

16. The elements are used to help shape the spaces where various activities will take place, and determine the human needs for those spaces.
