INTERIOR DESIGN THEORY THE ELEMENTS OF INTERIOR DESIGN

The elements of interior design are not to be confused with the visual elements of art such as form, line, color and texture.

The key parts of the physical interior which designers manipulate in three dimensions in order to arrive at a completed design are the nine elements of interior design. Environment; Space; Light; Ground plan; Enclosure; Support; Display, storage and work surface; Decoration and Information.

The basic elements in general descriptive terms, are four groups: 1- Environmental 2- Spatial 3- Three - dimensional (3D) 4- Two - dimensional (2D)

ELEMENTS OF INTERIOR DESIGN

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (1) ENVIRONMENT Natural and adapted environment. It is important to understand what we are doing in relation to the natural environment Fusion of both, Harmony.

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (2) SPACE Air, gas, smoke, mist. Space is the most difficult element to handle because it is the result of the making of the solid. Distance Views Major impact of interior

ELEMENT S WHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (3) LIGHT Artificial or Natural Task or decorative Illumination is complex and exists under controlled variations. To see Emphasize Focus.

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEY EFFECT/ USE (4) GROUND PLAN Gravity, incline, undulate, step Various levels to contend with. Hard Soft Polished walking and transporting

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (5) ENCLOSURE Structure, Form, Openings, Entrance, Exit, Divisions Main building form and subdivisions of space. Shelter Protection Connections.

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (6) SUPPORT For; seating, Holding, Hanging, Lying, Leaning. Normally described as furniture, but for supporting the human form Rest Work Play

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (7) DISPLAY, STORAGE and WORK SURFACE Objects -2D and 3D Visual or applied needs Usually under the heading of furniture Identify Remind Relate Work reference

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEYEFFECT/ USE (8) DECORATION Applied or integral with structure. Not an add-on or last minute decision Completion of Scheme Mood

ELEMENTSWHAT ARE THEY EFFECT/ USE (9) INFORMATION Graphic, Signage, Time, Communication Content Massage Directional

Building services (which cover heating, ventilation, telecommunication, IT, security, water and drainage) are excluded from the elements of interior design because they are usually the result of the design coordination of the elements discussed. If on the other hand, a choosing building services system begins to influence the design of any of the elements, then it should be put into the equation.

The elements are used to help shape the spaces where various activities will take place, and determine the human needs for those spaces.

The aim is to produce concepts that will eventually mature into a conclusive design concept, which will then be improved into a final design solution to present to the client.

THE EIGHT CONCEPTS ARE: 1.Planning 2.Circulation (people and objects) 3.Lighting 4.Building services 5.Three-dimensional 6.Construction 7.Materials 8.Color
